Photography Now is CPW’s annual call to discover the most compelling photography projects in the US and beyond. This call is juried by a different leading curator every year.

Photography Now 2021 JUROR

Maya Benton is a curator, photography historian, and writer based in New York City. She has organized numerous international traveling exhibitions, lectures widely, and is a frequent contributor to magazines and museum catalogs where she writes about photography, museums, and material culture. From 2008-2019, she was a curator at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York City, where she established a major archive and organized several of the most widely traveling exhibitions in ICP's history.

Benton recently organized an exhibition of photographer and filmmaker Gillian Laub's contemporary images of racial segregation in the American South, Southern Rites, that will travel through 2024. Her landmark 2013 exhibition, Roman Vishniac Rediscovered, traveled to nine venues in five countries and was accompanied by an award-winning exhibition catalog (Prestel) and a monograph (Delpire/Actes Sud).

Benton has worked in museum exhibition and education departments for twenty-five years including The Getty Museum, The RISD Museum, Harvard University Art Museums, The Jewish Museum of Florence, Italy, and The International Center of Photography. Her exhibitions have been presented at more than four dozen venues in ten countries. She recently collaborated with Sara Kay Gallery in New York City on a series of contemporary photography exhibitions.

She is the founder and director of the Jews and Photography Research Initiative, a non-profit collaborative of more than two hundred international curators, archivists, interdisciplinary academics, and critics who are interrogating the unique contribution of Jews to the history of the medium of photography. Her next book will be an anthology of seminal texts on Jews and Photography, published by Aperture.

Benton is a graduate of Brown University, Harvard University, and the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. Next year she will be a Visiting Professor at Yale University.

All artists selected for the exhibition will receive a one-year CPW Advanced Membership, which includes a Portfolio Review with CPW's Curatorial Staff among other exclusive benefits.

NEW: COMPLIMENTARY ACCESS TO OUR PROFESSIONAL PRACTICES ARTIST NETWORK (PPAN)

CPW is excited to offer everyone who submits an application, access to our 2020 PPAN recordings, a $105 value, for free. PPAN was created to help demystify the art of promotion, outreach, and professional practices so that artists can become active agents in their own success. The recordings feature in-depth sessions by the talented Doug Menuez, Jacquette M. Timmons, and Miriam Romais, who address how to overcome creative, financial, and promotional challenges and develop professional practices that nurture the artist's career for years to come. Upcoming PPAN sessions will expand on these topics and continue to build the tools that artists can utilize throughout their practice and careers.

After you complete your Photography Now submission, you will receive a Vimeo link and password in your confirmation email from Submittable that will enable you to access the recordings as soon as you are ready to watch. We look forward to seeing you!

WHAT IS ART II | OPEN CALL

Share

City:

Eligibility:

After a very successful first edition in December 2020, we have decided to start our 2021 program with “WHAT IS ART” second edition.

While some artists are keeping a very traditional approach to art, others are taking risks into the unknown and there has always been a constant debate about “What Is Art” and what makes it valuable.

In contemporary world success can be seen in both approaches, great examples are Damien Hirst and David Hockney, two of the worlds most famous and richest artists and yet with such a different approach to contemporary art.

The purpose of this exhibition is to create a dialogue between different approaches to contemporary art and to demonstrate that either way can be successful.

There is no subject restrictions just a couple of guidelines.

Eligible media but not limited:

-painting

-sculpture

-photography

-digital art

-Installation

-video

-prints

-textile

To make a submission is absolutely free but we do charge a £165 fee for each  participating artist as we only charge 15% sales commission and that includes:

-printed catalogs

-admin

-graphic designer

-champagne

-mix finger food

-caviar

-professional photographer

-hostess

-security

Important dates:

- the open call will run until 07 April.

- artworks delivery date is 15 April.

- the exhibition will run from 16 April until 22 April with a private view on 16 April - 6 to 9 pm at our gallery space in Aldgate.

Location.

We are situated right in the heart of artistic London:

- Aldgate East 1 min

- Aldgate 2 min

- Whitechapel 4 min

- Shoreditch high street 8 min

- Liverpool Street 9 min

- Tower Hill 9 min

- Monument 12 min

- Bank 12 min

- Cannon Street 15 min

- Old street 18 min

- Mansion house 18 min

- Moorgate 18 min

Alternatives.

We had a lot of enquires from foreign artists to exhibit with us but sometimes shipping the work to London in time might be a bit difficult in this challenging period, that’s why we’ve come up with an alternative! If you are one of the accepted artist and you find it hard to ship your work to us, you can send us photos of your work and we can print and frame it for you.

We have 3 available sizes for the frame:

32/32 cm

30/40 cm

40/50 cm

Event.

As some of you might know, UK will be in lockdown until mid February, after that all regions will get back to the tier system.

The massive vaccination campaign and the coming of spring gives us a lot of hope that things will slowly get back to normal.

If by any chance London will still be under a lot of restrictions, we will postpone our show until late March or mid April.

For this event we will have time slots of 30 minutes each- between  6 and  9 pm interval. For more info or to book a time slot simply email us at email@boomergallery.net.

Important.

As we run multiple open calls, please make sure you include in the email line the open call you apply for.

Good luck to you all!
