Motion State Dance Films Series, is the only year-long, traveling short dance film festival in New England devoted to showcasing the diversity of contemporary creative voices exploring the medium of choreography for the camera.

By taking the festival "on the road" and into non-traditional film venues, such as art galleries, music halls, performing arts theatres, and university classrooms, Motion State seeks to expose the films and film makers to new audiences.

Every screening is followed by a public Q & A with the curators. All festival artists are invited and encouraged to take part in the conversation, should they find themselves in the area of any given screening.

For our 2022-23 season we will continue to follow protocols for COVID gatherings but are hopeful all screenings will be in-person. In the event we can not gather in-person we will move to virtual screenings.

Motion State Arts is a non-profit organization based in Providence, RI. MSA produces the Motion State Dance Film Series, Playing Favorites (a compliation of films through the seasons), Motion State Dance Festival, and Small Moves, Big Picture (taking place on a small stage- SMBP is a mix of live performance and dance films).

OPEN CALL BIDFF #7 - SHORT DANCE FILMS

POTENTIAL WORLDS

Filmmakers, dance artists, animators, visual artists and digital art makers are invited to submit their works for the competitional section of BIDFF - Bucharest International Dance Film Festival (September 1-5, Bucharest, Romania).

BIDFF encourages syncretism and dialogue between movement and diverse forms of cinema and visual art, from the more traditional ones to experimental or virtual reality works.

Artists are encouraged to submit daring cinematic works in which the body relates to technology, ecology and new socio-political discourses.
BIDFF also addresses recent video-art formats and animations that question the relation between solid artistic content and the fast process of digitization. The curatorial approach goes towards trying to decipher, transform and shape these ideas.

Deadlines

→ Regular: June 25th 2021

→ Late: July 16th 2021

All applicants will be informed about the outcome of their submission by August 1st 2021.

Awards:

→ Best International Film

Rules & Terms

The competitional section is dedicated to short films only and is divided into International and Romanian. The board will take into consideration fiction, documentary and animation films that either use movement to explore an idea or speak about issues related to the body and the world of dance and performance. We also highly encourage you to apply if you have a short film that explores the future of art, questioning issues related to the ethics of collaboration, communication, and co-existence.

We are looking for:

→ films of a maximum of 20 minutes, produced in the last two years;

→ films in the genres of dance film, screendance, dance for camera, musical, animation, fiction or documentary about the body or the world of dance, experimental shorts conceptually oriented around the idea of movement;

→ films with a minimum quality of Full HD (1920 x 1080);

→ each director can submit a maximum of two films.

We are NOT looking for:

→ music videos, trailers or recordings of performances, films already submitted in the previous years to BIDFF, one-minute films, commercials, home-made videos;

We offer:

→ money awards for Best International Film and Best Romanian Film;

→ free entry to all the events of the festival, excluding workshops that require a previous application.

BIDFF is a platform for exquisite films that use movement as their main language or the body as their main subject. Faced with the camera lenses, the body becomes the main focus of cutting-edge arthouse films with a sometimes transparent, sometimes coded meaning, but always challenging the viewer to a playful exchange of information about social life, politics, extreme emotions, interesting places and oddly beautiful aesthetics.

The festival takes place each year in September, in multiple locations from Bucharest, Romania.

Besides film screenings, BIDFF organizes panels, exhibitions, public presentations and film production labs.

Bucharest International Dance Film Festival - Open Call for Shorts - dance films, musicals

Artistic field:

Country:

City:

Eligibility:

Bucharest International Dance Film Festival, the only cinema event in Romania dedicated to dance films, launched the open call for short dance films, musicals, and animated movies!

BIDFF is the only dance film festival in our country and it was founded out of love for the dance film genre, with the purpose of promoting artists that work across genres and presenting cinematographic projects in which the language of the body explores strong narratives. Each year, the festival has a different theme that reflects upon the contemporary realities and questions the future of the body.

By a surprising and meaningful coincidence, as we are all confronting the global pandemic, utopia | dystopia is the theme of the BIDFF in 2020. The festival looks towards the future and tries to envision it. This year we use utopian | dystopian impulses as an instrument for reflection and dance films as a medium.

We invite film directors, choreographers, visual artists, animators, and musicians to submit their short films to the sixth edition of the festival, that will take place in Bucharest, between September 3 – 6. We also highly encourage filmmakers and other artists to apply if they have a movement themed animation or a short film revolving around the concept of utopia and dystopia.

BIDFF has a regular international and national competition dedicated to short dance films, while also holding the new competitional category for musicals, introduced last year.
