We are excited to announce the call for entries for the Essence of Embodiment Festival to be presented in March 2021. Join us next spring in Jersey City and online, as we highlight emerging and established movement practitioners, directors, dance artists to Essence of Embodiment. Exploring other narratives involving trauma, PTSD, and approaches to healing. We're looking for class proposals that have a framework to explore joy, caring for your body, processing trauma, and healing.

Essence of Embodiment is curated by Iman Louis-Jeune, one of the curatorial dance fellows at Smush Gallery '20-21 and a dance-filmmaker herself. She actively works to uplift and engage in work that is cathartic rather than escapist.

*Films will be screened online as part of an online programming for the Essence of Embodiment Festival, in addition to a dance intensive, published zines, and a gallery exhibition. Due to COVID-19 we may have a limited in-person screening of accepted films. Due to limited physical space, we may be able to accommodate small/less-involved film installations, but our primary focus is showcasing the film itself.

RESID-ENS 2021

ENS is always looking for ways to help independent makers. RESID-ENS20 had to be canceled due to the pandemic but RESID-ENS21 is going to be the kick-off of a wonderful dance year. We will allow a makers to create a new performance in our black-box studio. We provide spots for makers of any level in their carrier and with a successful residency works will be recorded and/or included in in the programming of our theater performances.

Who can apply:

This residency is open for all sorts of dance makers that are:
- Seasoned veterans in the field
- Students looking for the experience
- Emerging choreographers starting their carrier as a maker
- Others willing to create a work in a company setting
- ​Applications are not limited to the Netherlands, international and traveling choreographers are welcome.​

Residency will take place in the dance collector black box studio

When will it take place?

In 2021 Resid-ENS21 will take place between
- 1/14 May 2021
- 31 May/13 June 2021
- 21/30 June 2021
multiple makers that are selected will work in one of these periods.

Are there costs?

There is an application fee. The residency covers the studio use, the provided dancers for it's selected makers. Makers are responsible to arrange their own temporary housing. ENS can help where necessary but charges a extra fee for the work.

Short work applications have a 35 euro application fee
Advanced work applications have a 55 euro application fee
Large work applications have a 75 euro application fee

Resid-ENS21-1

- This is for starting makers wanting to try a residency
- A four day program
- Maker will be allowed to create a small ten minute piece.
- Maker will be provided dance students to create.
- Application costs 35,- euro

Resid-ENS21-2

- This is for makers that already made a couple of dance performances
- A five day program​
- Making a strong work of +/-20 minutes.
- Maker will be provided dancers/ dance students 
- Application costs 55,- euro
- Only the 65 applicants with be considered

Resid-ENS21-3

- For makers with a lot of experience and is comfortable in making larger works. 
- A ten day program.
- For a 30/45 minute work.
- Maker works with company dancers
- Application costs 75,- euro
- Only 25 applicants will be considered​​

The Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University - Resident Fellowship

Overview

The Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University Fellowship Program offers residencies to scholars and artists of all disciplines to develop projects that expand the way we think about the history, practice, and performance of dance. Past fellows have come from wide-ranging disciplines such as history, design, philosophy, visual arts, and more. Fellows are not required to be experts in ballet or dance, but must have an interest in engaging with the art.

The fellowship provides space, a stipend, and the time to pursue rigorous work. Fellows also gain new colleagues and a broad community of scholars and artists, two communities that do not often meet.

Applications for 2021-2022 fellowships will be open from September 15, 2020 at 9:00am EST through November 2, 2020 at 9:00am EST. Applicants will be notified in March 2021.
 

Fellowship Award Includes:

  • Stipend of $750/week
  • Access to CBA’s community of 150+ artists and scholars
  • Use of CBA’s dance studio, offices, and conference rooms
  • Housing, as needed and available
  • Round trip transportation to and from New York City
  • J-1 visa facilitation

Expectations

  • Work at CBA for the majority of your residency.
  • Present your work in a seminar to current and alumni fellows.
  • Attend CBA events, including weekly seminars and CBA’s public programs.
  • Give and receive feedback, collaborate, and otherwise engage with your cohort.
  • Submit feedback on your fellowship as requested.
    • Note: At this time, The Center cannot commit to additional funding for collaborators. If a fellow decides to work with collaborators (e.g. designers, musicians, dancers), the fellow is expected to pay those collaborators out of his or her own fellowship.

Duration

Fellowship timing and duration depend on individual fellow needs and project scopes. Prior residencies have run between four and sixteen weeks. The residency must occur during NYU’s academic year (September 2021 – May 2022).

 

Eligibility

  • Scholar or artist* pursuing an original project related to dance.
  • Applicants applying with scholarly projects (e.g. journal articles, monographs) must have a Ph.D.
  • Applicants must show exceptional promise and/or have demonstrated significant accomplishments in their field. We encourage applicants from all career stages to apply.
  • Dance expertise is not required.
  • Students (as of September 2021) are not eligible.
  • NYU faculty are welcome and encouraged to apply. Payment structure may vary based on faculty appointment and school.

*Past fellows have come from dozens of disciplines as wide-ranging as history, design, philosophy, visual arts, religion, literature, and more.

The CBA Fellowship Program does not support:

  • Projects in arts administration 
  • Projects focused on the applicant’s personal memoir or autobiography
  • Projects involving giving dance classes 
  • Projects reviewing prior work, such as:
    • editing, digitizing, or organizing archives 
    • editing films or book anthologies

 

Application materials

The application should reflect the applicant’s genuine aspirations and expertise. We expect scholars and artists to each demonstrate different strengths that are reflective of their training. Project proposals are not required to involve both scholarly and artistic inquiry. Successful proposals will focus on the project’s essential research questions and will be clear, concise, and free of jargon.

Applications will be open from September 15, 2020 at 9:00am EST through November 2, 2020 at 9:00am EST. Applicants will be notified in March 2021.
