Overview
This workshop-based online program focuses on providing structured support for new fiction writers wanting to improve their writing skills.

What does the program offer?
An energizing, transformative experience designed to help participants take their fiction to a new level, this program is a perfect entry point into Banff Centre’s full suite of Literary Arts programs. This program offers new writers of fiction the opportunity to work on a portion of a manuscript in a workshop setting with editorial faculty. Participants will have the opportunity to work closely with faculty - Katherena Vermette, Michelle Good, and Amber Dawn, as well as partake in Q&A sessions, and one-on-one workshopping. Instructors will discuss ideas, experiences, and obstacles that participants may be encountering with their new manuscripts and emerging practices.

The program will help writers build their critical vocabulary, making them better critics of their own and others’ work. Participants will also learn more about the craft of writing, and about the conventions and possibilities for innovation in fiction.

Merit – not means – drives opportunity at Banff Centre. Participants in this program will receive 100% scholarship for tuition.

Who should apply?
Any new writer of fiction interested in structured feedback from faculty and fellow participants will benefit from this program. The program is open to writers with no publications, a few publications, or even a first book.

Writers from all backgrounds, and all gender identities and expressions working in fiction are encouraged to apply.

*Financial Aid up to 100% available for participants to cover program fees.

Seeking Prose, Poetry and Artwork on the Theme of Hospitals

Share

Country:

Eligibility:

The A3 Review is looking for poems, short stories, mini-essays, comics, illustrations, etc inspired by Hospitals.

Deadline is 25th of April, 2020.

We welcome short stories, flash fiction, poetry, comics, graphic stories, a snippet of memoir, photographs, illustrations, and any combination of the above. The only restriction is a word-limit of 150 and images should fit well into an A6 postcard-sized panel.

Some ideas for inspiration: Work inspired by hospital buildings, for example, and their public phones and car parks. Or the view from a hospital window. Consider the small things, too. The surgeon's tools, the items on a tray of food, those small acts of kindness. Write a praise song to nurses. Write about ways to pass the time in hospital and the memories those activities evoke. You could tell the story of being rushed to hospital or escaping from one. The first time you had stitches. An encounter in a waiting room. The second time you had stitches. Write about hospital food and hospital beds, sanitation and hygiene, humour and coldness. Take inspiration from Marianne Boruch’s “Hospital” and consider what it's like to watch hospital staff doing their work.

Publication and cash prizes.
