The R.E.A.L.M.S. institute

Wicked Amusements is calling all visual and installation artists to participate in their newest project, The REALMS Institute - an immersive art and recreation experience with rotating exhibits/adventures that will be part of Malden’s nascent Gaming District.

Our initial installment will be an interpretation of the mini-golf model, so we are looking for proposals with amazing designs and sculptural elements that can serve either as full golf holes themselves or as part of the broader scenic ambience. Creators with experience working in large scale and kinetics are particularly encouraged to respond.

Proposals will be accepted on a bid/commision basis, so you have a hand in determining your compensation.

Some broader information follows below, but if your curiosity is piqued, contact Jason Ries, Project Manager at info@wickedamusements (subject: REALMS proposal) asap.

Include CV and any digital portfolio access to give us a feel of your work.

If you have an idea in mind, you can suggest it in the body of the message but you are also welcome to simply express general interest at this time.

We will then reach out to schedule Open Shop info sessions at our Woburn production facility, to be held in early August.  These meetings will be the best opportunity to have more detailed conversations about the scope, timeline and submission process.

Regardless of the ongoing exhibit, visitors to “The Institute” will immediately be projected into a world of pulp pseudo-science and tongue-in-cheek odes to the age of atomic experimentation.  If you can imagine a mashup of the look of Bioshock and the tone of Portal squeezed through the lens of Buckaroo Banzai, you’re on the right track.

Within that framework, we are open to a full range of theming ideas, with a preference for originality and playfulness in design.

Media may include (but is not limited to) metals, video, textiles, and automation (pneumatics, electronics). Real-world construction requirements and ability to endure several months of play will be a consideration. However, if we love your concept, we may be able to work with you to design it into a realistically playable hole

While submissions from creatives in the Boston metro area will receive preference, we are open to inquiries from anywhere and any background (i.e. scenic designers, architects, electrical engineers, mini golf lovers, video artists, etc.).  Collaborations are welcome and there is no limit to submissions, though each design proposal requires a separate submission.

Entry deadline - May 16th

This is a call to artists working in (painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, video and sound) that in some way relate to cinema. We will be working with different genres of film noir, sci-fi, horror, crime, fantasy, adventure and drama and so on. Your work does not have to directly relate to any specific movie as long as it:

1) tells a story through its depiction.

2) uses similar constructs to movies, like the use of lighting, angles or has a specific theme.

The show will take place at Bostwick Gallery in Cleveland, OH. In July 2020 (specific date TBD)

Art Requirements:

There is no size limit as long as it can fit through the 9ft tall 4ft wide door. You will be expected to drop off and pick up your work, time slots for those will be discussed after the selection of artists.

If your work is painting, drawing or photography, it must be hang ready!  (if you prefer using other methods of hanging we can discuss those possibilities.)

If your work is sculpture, there is a weight limit of 45lbs.

If your work is video or sound, you must have your own equipment (projector, speakers, cables, laptop & extension cords.)
