CAMP is a residential arts facility in the French Pyrenees. It's a place where great art is made, new movements are formed, new ideas are explored and groundbreaking people are nurtured. CAMP is located in Aulus les Bains, the last village before the France/Spain Pyrenean frontier chain. The location is spectacular - we are nestled at 750m above sea level, surrounded by snowcapped peaks over 3000m high, ancient forests and cascading waterfalls. There are eagles, lammergeiers, vultures, ibex and bears. Walk out of the residency, and within ten minutes you are completely alone in one of the most beautiful mountain landscapes in Europe. Aulus les Bains is also a spa village - there are hot water springs, and a thermal spa in the village to take advantage of the healing and relaxing properties of the water.

How do we experience language in music, both as composers and listeners? What kind of meaning exists in words that are sung/uttered in music? Is it a different kind of meaning than the meaning found in words used for everyday communication? Is it possible that there is a better word for a word that is sung (for instance, "song-word")? We will explore these questions by listening to all kinds of vocal music that utilizes conventional words, made-up words, multi-lingual texts, mumbles, babbles, sighs, etc.

Julia Holter is a composer, performer, and recording artist based in Los Angeles. Her interest in sonic mysteries has led her to record in various settings - in her home, outside with a field recorder, and in recording studios - as well as to perform live, often with a focus on the voice and the space between language and babble. Holter's music is multi-layered and texturally rich. She has amassed a body of work that explores melody within free song structures, atmosphere, and the impulses of the voice. She has released five studio albums: Aviary (2018), Have You In My Wilderness (2015), Loud City Song (2013), Ekstasis (2012), and Tragedy (2011). Holter has performed her music at venues and festivals throughout the world with an ensemble of creative musicians. She has written music for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and other ensembles, as well as scores for the TV show "Pure" (2019) and the film "Bleed for This" (2016).

Clarity Artist Project

From the 12th to 15th March we will be holding an artist lead project ‘Clarity’ each day artist will respond to a different theme and create work accordingly. At the beginning of the four day period we will give artists a series of words and descriptions revolving around lifestyle and the human experience, you will be asked to create a series of works in response. All artists will be featured in murze Issue Eleven, this issue will take on mental health and wellbeing.

For this project we are looking for fast paced responses, creating expressive works using any medium you see fit. The idea is by the end of the process we will have a collection of works from a variety of artists that explore the set themes in an individual explorative way. Each day the words will form a starting point for artists to create work, however the word need not be reflected in the outcome, it should be used as a stepping stone to create the piece.
