Call for artists for 2027

At the RaumArs residency, international contemporary art meets a vibrant local community and a historic setting. The residency encourages artists to engage with others — whether local residents, fellow artists or operators from various sectors. At RaumArs, artistic work takes place as part of the city or the residency offers time to focus on independent work to experiment, connect, and create something new.

Rauma charms visitors with its unique blend of coastal living, wooden architecture, and rich cultural heritage. The UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Old Rauma and Sammallahdenmäki, along with the archipelago and the maritime landscape, create an inspiring environment all year round. At the same time, Rauma is a peaceful city of just the right size: easily accessible, yet full of active cultural life. Here, an artist can both find peace to work and be part of a community where art is visible and felt in everyday life.

Application for independent or community work. Artists applying to a community residency are expected to present a project plan for a community/participatory art practice, public/social art project or an environmental project, which will be realized during the residency. The main selection criteria will be the artists’ motivation to work in collaboration with local people, the proposal and the quality of previous art. Many of the projects are carried out with school children or youth during the school year, but artists actualize the project according to their wishes and collaborate with any group. The applicant doesn’t have to have previous teaching experience but need to be able to carry out the project.

RaumArs offers accommodation and exhibition space in the old fully renovated and equipped house. In a year the board of directors chooses 2–3 community/stipend artists to whom RaumArs gives a room free of charge, some materials and administrative help in producing the accepted proposal. Other chosen artists work independently and pay a small monthly rent. At a same time RaumArs can host one to three artists in two bedrooms.

Besides the residency there are three rooms for exhibitions or events, also for other than residency artists to apply and use. Still, most of the workshops happen at schools or similar spaces.  E.g. for the dancers an alternative dance project is recommended. In some cases, artist can negotiate a workshop space from our partners. The “studio” in the apartment is more like a small study room.
