Title: STREETS TO CANVAS

Call for Artists: STREETS TO CANVAS at Saint Mark's Arts, 4 Saint Mark's Place

Saint Mark’s Arts invites NYC-area artists to participate in our upcoming group exhibition,STREETS TO CANVAS. This exhibition celebrates the creative journey of street art, where the raw, bold energy of urban expression meets the refined world of fine art, transitioning from the streets to the canvas. We are seeking artists who have honed their skills through street art and are now transforming those works into gallery-ready pieces.

Street art in New York City emerged as an underground movement in the 1960s and 1970s, particularly flourishing in areas like the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Harlem. The city’s urban landscape, including subway trains, became massive canvases for artists to express themselves publicly and often rebelliously. This form of art was about reclaiming public spaces, giving a voice to the marginalized, and challenging traditional artistic norms.

Today, street art has evolved into a recognized and respected part of the fine art world, with many prominent street artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Futura making the transition from public spaces to gallery walls. Their work, which began on the streets, has become celebrated in galleries and museums, yet it retains the unfiltered, energetic spirit of its origins.

STREETS TO CANVAS will highlight this merger of worlds, showcasing how the rebellious essence of street art thrives on canvas. As the art form has gained mainstream recognition, the transition from tagging subway trains to creating works on canvas reflects a broader artistic journey.

We encourage artists to submit their strongest work that exemplifies this transformation from the streets to the gallery. Whether your piece is rooted in graffiti, stenciling, murals, or other urban influences, we want to see how you’ve adapted street art into the gallery setting. Submit your best example for consideration in this exciting and dynamic show.
