ExtrArtis in Sorrento New Open Call for the 2025 Artist Residencies
Applications: February 7, 2025 – May 31, 2025
Residency Periods: August 1–15, 2025 | August 16–30, 2025

ExtrArtis is pleased to announce the launch of the fourth edition of its artist residencies at Relais La Rupe in Sorrento. For the first time, this edition will host 10 artists and feature an international collaboration with the Spanish residency program DOM Art Residency.

For the fourth consecutive year, the cultural association ExtrArtis opens the doors of the 16th-century villa, Relais La Rupe, to 10 artists who will have the opportunity to participate in a two-week residency, either in the first or second half of August 2025. Conceived with the aim of enhancing lesser-explored cultural heritage, the project promotes art as a tool for reflection and transformation of both tangible and intangible assets of the territory. Through the exploration of physical space and the identity values of the community, the residency encourages the rediscovery of local memory and culture, positioning them as key drivers for rebalancing socio-economic development and countering the growing disaffection towards architecture and places. A major novelty of this edition is the collaboration with DOM Art Residence, a Spanish artist residency with a hybrid and itinerant nature. DOM combines respect for places with a nomadic aspiration, leading it to constant movement and engagement with new contexts.

At a time when we are increasingly questioning our relationship with territories - how we modify them but also how they shape our daily lives - the residency aims to pose questions to the artists and inhabitants. When, due to external factors such as tourism, identities are imposed on territories, we ask ourselves: how authentic can they be? How can an identity gather, and accommodate, a community? Above all, when belonging to certain areas becomes increasingly inaccessible or unsustainable, we want to question what soul each territory has and what it represents to its inhabitants. Combining the aspirations of the two organisations, this year's residency aims to investigate the theme of the Genius Loci, understood as the spirit of place and, therefore, the combination of historical, natural, humanistic and human factors that shape the character of a territory and its architecture.

As part of this collaboration, the residency will be enriched by two exhibition: an introductory exhibition featuring the selected artists and a collection of their previous works, before the residency begins; a final exhibition showcasing the works created during their stay on-site.
To apply for the open call, each artist must complete the application form, including a CV, motivation letter, portfolio, and a proposal for the artistic production to be carried out during the residency.

Selected artists will receive a financial grant for the production of their works and the necessary materials. They will be provided with free accommodation and workspace and will be supported by an artistic coordinator for the organization of the final exhibition.

Additionally, artists will have access to a free international educational program, guided tours of the region, meetings with local artists and artisans, and community engagement events such as conferences and gatherings. These activities will be organized within the availability of the selected artists, ensuring they do not interfere with the realization of their artistic projects.
