Call out for Musician/Composer

Applicants must be BRISTOL UK BASED: this job will not be possible by remote working.

Scarlet Oak Theatre are looking for a Bristol based musician/composer to join us for the creation period of a new family Christmas/Winter Show in 2025 in Bristol. We need our musician to join us for R&D creation rehearsals in April/May 2025 followed by a preview show. There will be a further rehearsal / music tweaking period in October 2025 before the show starts to tour in November/December 2025.

A bit about Us

We are Jasmine Orchard and Lucia d’Inverno and together we founded Scarlet Oak Theatre in Bristol to produce work that excites and engages young people and their adults together. We are currently touring two other shows, “The Zoo That Comes To You” and “Along Came a Magpie”, which you can find on our website if you would like to get a feel of the work we create (www.scarletoaktheatre.com). This will be the first Christamas/Winter show we make together and we are very excited to have Marc Parrett (The Object Project) on board as our director and Katie Sykes joining as our Designer. 

The Show Concept 

Title: “Where did the Snow Go?”. This will be a show that explores the joyful nature of snow through friendship, slapstick comedy, clowning, puppetry and playfully surreal physical theatre. Two friends, disappointed by the lack of real snow and spurred on by their adoration of snow globes, struggle to create their own makeshift “perfect snow globe day” from the things they have to hand (pine trees from umbrellas, snow from pompoms…). This will be a cosy, funny, silly but heartfelt family show with a mixture of excitement, magic and a little sprinkling of peril. There will be little to no talking in the show so we are keen that music will be very important in shaping the mood and story. 

Who we are looking for

We are looking for someone playful and dynamic who is happy to contribute musical ideas and content during devising in the rehearsal room and then some days outside of the rehearsal room  composing and recording the sound track for the show. The cast will cue the sound track/s independently when touring the show. We are very early on in the creation process and are open to different musical styles and instruments. As well as having recorded music the performers are keen to explore making some simple live music/sound effects on stage.

• 4th-11th May 2025: R&D, rehearsals and preview (8 days) 

• 19th-24th October 2025: Final Rehearsal, and last music tweaking (1 week).

Fee (based on the 2025-2026 ITC Rates)
