JAMAICA FLUX 5TH EDITION CALL FOR NEW YORK ARTISTS

Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning (JCAL) is now accepting submissions through March 28, 2020 for Jamaica Flux: Workspaces & Windows 2021 . JCAL seeks proposals from artists to research the neighborhood of Jamaica, Queens, in 2020 for the presentation, and possible creation, of new, site-specific, public art projects that engage the local community in 2021. 

Not confined by gallery walls, Jamaica Flux is a contemporary public art project in which visual and performance art are displayed at a variety of locations along Jamaica Avenue in Queens, NY, including public and private open spaces and storefronts. With the intent to build equity and expand cultural inclusion throughout Southeast Queens, Jamaica Fluxstrives to commission and present art that involves the local community and creates changes in behavior and policy while also documenting the developments and contradictions that arise in the process.

First conceived in 2002 as a pilot program addressing the isolation of the art gallery from the community, Jamaica Flux has evolved with the community in every iteration to reflect the pressing issues of the times and to advocate for social change through the arts. Now in its 5th iteration, Jamaica Flux: Workspaces & Windows 2021 is dedicated to advancing research and visual and performative actions that foster social change, critical public discourse on advocacy, policy change, economic growth, collective civic action, and community engagement. The project aims to bring artists, local residents, curators, scholars, community leaders, developers, and politicians together to catalyze the transformative power of the visual arts, building on the cultural legacy of Jamaica while addressing the challenges of a quickly growing local economy.

This is an exciting time for Downtown Jamaica, and we believe this iteration of Jamaica Fluxis timely to document the rapid changing neighborhood and to be a platform for artists to voice concerns and advocate ideas. Artists living in New York City are eligible to apply, and all media is welcomed.
