GALLERY MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION

Founded in 1974, PLEIADES is an artist run gallery maintained by its officers and members. The Officers: President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer & Assistant Treasurer are elected annually by the members. The gallery’s policy allows each member artist to assume an equal share of responsibilities in a collegial and professional environment.

Located in Chelsea, New York City, PLEIADES GALLERY is one of the oldest and most successful artist run galleries in Manhattan.

The mission of the Pleiades Gallery is to create, maintain and perpetuate a community of highly talented and committed artists, with a handsome, professional gallery for the exhibition of their works. It is the further mission of this artist-run community:

• Provide a fresh alternative to the constraints and dictates of the commercial gallery system;
• Encourage the highest standards of imagination and creativity;
• Foster a collegial atmosphere for art discussions, explorations and debates;
• Widely publicize the Gallery’s events, news and accomplishments;
• Stimulate and stir the sensibilities of the visiting public, art lovers, collectors and critics;
• Encourage the sale of the exhibited art works.

MEMBERSHIP PRIVILEGES

Currently each member is entitled to a 4-week solo show (approx 100 linear ft wall space) The dates of the solo show are determined by lottery.

Members may have one solo show approximately every 18 -24 months. (Depending on membership numbers) Artists exhibiting in a solo show are encouraged to seek advice from the Gallery’s Exhibition Committee. Dues must be current at time of show and new members who have a solo show before the end of 12 months must be paid up through 12 months.

TO APPLY FOR MEMBERSHIP:

APPLICATIONS & ARTWORK are screened on the 1st Sunday of each month except for July and August. All members present at our regular meeting will review and judge potential candidates whether or not there is a current opening available.

*WEB SITE OR IMAGES: Submit a link to your web site or jpeg images of your work. Either must contain the following: artist’s name, medium, dimensions of artwork and title.

*ACCEPTANCE: When art work is accepted by the gallery’s members, and an opening for membership is available, the potential member is contacted and interviewed by one or more members to determine if the artist understands and can contribute to the co-op gallery experience.   

*UPON ACCEPTANCE as a new member, you will be given a LETTER OF AGREEMENT to sign. This letter outlines your privileges & responsibilities to the gallery. The Gallery provides listings in the Chelsea Art Map for each show.

*SALES: PLEIADES GALLERY does not charge commission. All sales are handled and arranged directly by the artist.

*MEETINGS: Held on the first Sunday of every month at 11:00 AM, our meetings are an invaluable part of belonging to PLEIADES. Here we develop an artistic community and express our individual views. In addition, members are expected to be actively involved in Committee Work and to volunteer for projects that come up.

*MEMBERSHIP FEES AND DUES:

New members must pay a one time initiation fee of $500 (payment installments may be arranged). Dues must be paid on time to ensure efficiency in running the gallery.

There are 2 categories of membership: Active and Less Active:

ACTIVE: All Gallery Officers included. Must choose a Gallery Job. Pays $210 dues per month. Must fulfill 4 work days per season or pay remaining work hours.

LESS ACTIVE: Cannot fulfill a Gallery Job. Pays $260 dues per month. Must fulfill 4 work days per season or pay work hours.

*REQUIRED WORK: Each member must complete 4 days of mandatory work in a 12-month period for the benefit of the gallery. Solo and Group Shows are not included in the 4 day work requirement. Members who fail to fulfill this obligation will be required to pay $100 per day to hire a replacement.

*ANNUAL EXHIBITS:  Friends of Pleiades Invitational & Annual Members Group Show

GALLERY HOURS:  Tuesday to Saturday: 12 am to 6 pm
