Project Background

The Texas Christian University (TCU) in Fort Worth, Texas is seeking artists to create permanent public art works for three sites in the Intellectual Commons on the main campus. In 2020, the University launched the Race & Reconciliation Initiative (RRI). The initiative represents a restorative justice effort focused on the University’s relationship with slavery, racism, and the Confederacy. The RRI’s First Year Survey Report recommended "providing more robust contextual information near the Clark Brothers’ statue” in order to “memorialize a more complete story of TCU…” (RRI First Year Survey Report, p. 28).  As follow up to the report a master plan was developed to identify means of engaging with the statue’s symbolic complexity by transforming the Intellectual Commons to a place for gathering, relationship building, and reflection. The goal of the program is to contextualize the history of the institution, while also creating “gateways” to the past and future.

TCU is interested in commissioning artwork that meets the needs of the community, the public use of each site, and reflects the preservation of the historic assets of the institution. Artists will create site-specific works that incorporate the collaborative ideas of all the interested parties involved in the effort to improve, beautify, and strengthen the school community.

Project Details

One artist will be chosen to create and install a series of three curvilinear/elliptical metal archway sculptures along a major pedestrian thoroughfare that serves as the primary east-west connection between the academic and student life precincts of campus, in addition to being the site of student programming throughout the year and campus tours. Selected works will be on view as a permanent feature of the TCU campus. The artwork should be durable, safe, weather-resistant, and require minimal maintenance. Possible archway depth will be from 12” to 24”, and 8-12’ in diameter (approx. 8-12’ from ground level to top of the archway, inside edge). Arches will include cut-out engraving and relief techniques. Budget $125,000 - $150,000 and must include design, fabrication, travel, transportation of work to site, insurance, and documentation of artwork.
