Lady JYM Collective invites submissions for its Short Story Mixtape Series.

Short Story Mixtape Series Vol. I

Theme: Power

The Short Story Mixtape Series seeks to revive the lost art of mixtapes and storytelling. In short, the Short Story Mixtape Series is a collaborative, ongoing, low-fi, and free mixtape of short stories.

With the selection and prompt of a theme, the Short Story Mixtape Series asks participants to pause, ruminate, respond, and then select a work that reflects the theme. Once a story is chosen we ask for you to record yourself reading the story out loud. Use whatever device that is accessible to you - anything from your phone to a zoom recorder will do. Submit your recordings to: ladyjymcollective@gmail.com. Submissions for each theme will be accepted on a rolling basis.

The recordings will be made available for online listening and public use.

Details to note:

• Parameters for a short story are: any text (prose, essay, poetry) that is a complete thought or work from start to finish. Please do not select excerpts or chapters that are dislodged from a larger work.
• The short story may either be your own writing or that of a published author.
• We often read faster than we need to out loud, take your time :). As a rule of thumb, one page of double-spaced, 12-point text will take roughly two minutes to read at a reasonable pace.
• Each recording must start with the script of, "Hello, my name is '______,' and I will be reading 'Title' by 'Author.'"
• The body of each submission email should note the theme: power, your name, and the Title/Author of the recorded short story.
