FILLED UP A Ceramic Cup Show Prospectus The cup, one of ceramics more iconic images, has been used as a metaphor, a sculptural element, a sculptural foundation and a functional daily piece of dinnerware. The New Harmony Clay Project in cooperation with the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art (NHGCA), a University of Southern Indiana division of outreach and engagement, is now accepting entries for its first annual juried cup show set to be exhibited in historic New Harmony, IN, at the NHGCA, December 5, 2020-January 22, 2021. Whether you choose to fill your cups with beverages, food, pencils, or ideology, this exhibition will feature over 100 handmade creations from artists across the country. This exhibition is made possible in part by the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana, Lenny and Anne Dowhie Trusts, and the Indiana Arts Commission, which receives support from the State of Indiana and the National Endowment for the Arts. Entries must have been completed within 3 years of the entry deadline. Ceramics vessel forms (cups, mugs, yunomis, tankards, tumblers, goblets, tea bowls, etc.), ceramic sculptures, and ceramic installation works are eligible. Mixed media works are eligible only if clay is the primary medium, 70% of submission. Individual components of ceiling suspended or wall mounted works should not exceed 20 pounds. All entries must be original works and available for the duration of the exhibit. Works not gallery-ready or not exhibiting good craftsmanship, may be omitted from the exhibit. Accepted works cannot be substituted; those differ significantly from the entry images or suffer from poor presentation will be disqualified. Notification of accepted works will begin November 9-11, 2020 through email. Artist's contracts, label information and other documents will be included as attachments to be returned prior to the show. The opening for the exhibition will be December 5, 2020. All artists are welcome to attend; however, a reception is TBA, given the current COVID-19 pandemic. If COVID-19 or any other pandemic or natural disaster were to cause temporary closing of the university art gallery or disruption of this campus event, this juried exhibition will be moved to a fully online exhibition. 402 NORTH ST, P.O. The entry fee will be donated to the New Harmony Clay Project to support its mission to foster an environment that supports the investigation of new ideas and work in the ceramic arts. Application fee should be submitted online with completed application; without this, applications will not be processed. AWARDS Overflowing Award: $250 given to the Best Cup in Show To the Brim Award: $50 given to five Honorable Mentioned cups in the show All accepted entries will be eligible for the “Overflowing” and “To the Brim” awards. Artists need not be present to win. The winners will receive monetary rewards totaling up to $250. Awards will be determined through the Juror and revealed during the opening of the exhibition. JUROR Paul Andrew Wandless is an artist, author, educator and curator who regularly gives workshops and lectures regarding his art, techniques, and research around the US and Canada. Wandless authored “Image Transfer on Clay,” “500 Prints on Clay, Image & Design Transfer Techniques,” and co-authored “Alternative Kilns & Firing Techniques.” He frequently writes for several arts magazines and is featured in the DVD, “Fundamentals of Screen Printing on Clay with Paul Andrew Wandless.” Wandless holds an MFA degree from Arizona State University, an MA degree from Minnesota State University-Mankato and a BFA degree from University of Delaware. Born in Miami, Florida and raised in Delaware, Paul Andrew Wandless currently lives and has his studio in Chicago, IL. His work utilizes the figure as a point of departure for visual narratives. Ceramic processes and printmaking techniques are combined to create clay prints and clay sculptures. Wandless also works directly in other mediums such as printmaking, stone carving, mold making, metalsmithing, wood carving and painting. His art has been exhibited in museums and galleries since 1995, is collected privately and publicly and is published in 16 books. Visit www.studio3artcompany.com for more information and to view more images of his work. IMAGE REQUIREMENTS Artists may submit 1-3 original works which have been completed in the last three years. Each entry requires a JPEG image and the following description: Title; Materials (type of clay, other media, and firing method); Dimensions (H x W x D inches); Year Completed; Price (or NFS). Artists may submit up 1-2 images for each entry. Images must be sized appropriately at a resolution of 72 dpi and 12 inches (864 pixels) on its longest side (8x12 inches or 576x864 pixels is typical accepted image size). Files should be labeled first name_last name_entry number (e.g. John Smith would be john_smith_2.jpg). SHIPPING AND DELIVERY The artist is responsible for the shipping and insurance of the work to and from the location. Shipped works must be sent in an easily reusable container/packaging and include prepaid return shipping. Works should be shipped to arrive only during the dates listed below. Hand-deliveries are welcome. No artwork may be removed from the exhibition until after the conclusion of the show. The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art (NHGCA) will provide insurance coverage for all artwork while on the gallery premises; however, the hosting organizations assume no responsibility and shall not be held liable for damages of any kind which may occur while work is in transit. Works can be available for purchase or listed as NFS (Not for Sale). A commission of 35% will be taken on any sales. LEGAL TERMS The submitted entry form signifies the artist's understanding and agreement with the terms and conditions stated herein and a commitment to participate in this exhibition. Works selected cannot be substituted and must be available for the duration of the show. Participating artists are responsible for all costs related to shipping, delivery, and return of works. Unless handdelivered, works must be carefully packed and shipped in a reusable box, container or crate, including packing materials. The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art (NHGCA) will provide insurance coverage for all artworks while on the gallery premises. Insurance for artworks while in transit to and from NHGCA is the responsibility of the artist. NHGCA, staff, and volunteers, will not be held liable for any damage or loss that occurs during transit. On acceptance, NHGCA and the New Harmony Clay Project (NHCP) retain the right to reproduce images and photograph all works displayed in the exhibition, regardless of copyright, for promotional or educational purposes. Images may be used for documentation, sales, promotion and publicity. Neither NHGCA nor the NHCP can be held responsible for the effects of COVID19 or any other pandemic or natural disaster resulting in the temporary closing of the NHGCA.
