The initiative for the promotion of contemporary watercolor painting “Color in Water” invites painters to submit their artworks for review to participating in its 11th international exhibition themed “Spring“.

The exhibition will take place in an established art gallery in Athens in physical form, while it will also be available internationally online via the ARTgrID platform. The official languages of the exhibition are Greek and English, and a commemorative catalog – an e-book – will be published in both languages. Participants in the exhibition will be eligible for audience awards.

Exhibition Curator: Paris Kapralos.

Theme and Type of Works. To participate in the exhibition, you may submit watercolor paintings on paper, using any water-soluble medium on paper (watermedia, watercolor, water-soluble inks, pencils, powders, natural water-based pigments, as well as alternative media such as tea or coffee).

The works may engage with the theme in any way the artist deems appropriate.

If selected, you will be required to send your works on paper (unframed), as the organizers will frame them for the exhibition, provided they are of a size equal to or smaller than 38×56 cm or 56×38 cm (commonly referred to internationally as “half imperial paper size”). You may submit larger works; however, if selected, you will need to frame them yourself at your own expense and arrange delivery to the gallery.

Who Can Participate. The exhibition is open to artists who are at least 18 years old and reside anywhere in the world, regardless of origin or nationality.

Conceptual Framework. Watercolor painting flourished in the 19th century when artists rediscovered the magic of the natural landscape. With the arrival of Romanticism, art was no longer limited to academic depictions; nature became the protagonist! Painters, inspired by the changing seasons, captured landscapes bursting with light and color. Spring, with its pink cherry blossoms, green meadows, and crystal-clear streams, was a favorite subject. The translucent hues of watercolor brought these images to life, conveying a sense of freshness and renewal. Artists like Turner and Constable uniquely captured the atmosphere of the season. Even today, watercolor remains synonymous with spring. It is the perfect technique to depict the airy, ephemeral beauty of nature, reminding us that every moment is a small work of art!

PUBLIC AWARDS & PRIZES
During the exhibition, both visitors to the gallery in Athens and visitors to the online exhibition which will run in parallel  will be invited to vote for artists in various categories. The artist with the most votes in each category will receive an award. Press announcements (Press Release) with the results of this process will be made in the Greek Media, and selected artists will receive non-monetary prizes from the exhibition sponsors (e.g., art materials, professional services, exposure opportunities, etc.). Detailed information will be available 15 days before the exhibition opening, and the process will be publicly announced.
