Open Call for visual artists to participate in the international exhibition titled “Silence, Voice, Resonance”, taking place in Athens, Greece. This is a curated exhibition, focusing on the interplay between silence and voice as integral elements of human experience, drawing on philosophical, psychological, and sociopolitical perspectives to explore their roles in perception, communication, and self-realization.

The official languages of the exhibition are Greek and English, and a commemorative catalog will be published in both languages. Alongside the physical exhibition, an international online version will be available via the ARTgrID platform for one month.

Curator: Paris Kapralos.

Eligibility. The exhibition welcomes submissions of paintings, photographs, collages, digital art, and video art from visual artists worldwide. Artists may approach the subject in any way they deem appropriate.

Conceptual Framework. Silence, as the absence of sound, is not a void but a canvas of concepts and emotions. The French philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty, in his work “The Visible and the Invisible,” highlights silence as a precondition for voice, suggesting that perception is shaped through pauses and disruptions in continuous flow. Similarly, Axel Honneth’s theory of social recognition in “The Struggle for Recognition: The Moral Grammar of Social Conflicts” emphasizes silence as a form of communication denial, which can be either oppressive or liberating. From a psychological perspective, Carl Jung’s shadow theory suggests that silence confronts us with the unconscious, sparking inner explorations. Voice, on the other hand, becomes the medium of existence assertion, as examined by Hannah Arendt in “The Human Condition,” where public voice constitutes action and self-realization. Resonance, whether emotional or social, bridges silence and voice, making both integral to human experience and communication.
