Photography Now is CPW’s annual call to discover the most compelling photography projects in the US and beyond. This call is juried by a different leading curator every year.

Photography Now 2021 JUROR

Maya Benton is a curator, photography historian, and writer based in New York City. She has organized numerous international traveling exhibitions, lectures widely, and is a frequent contributor to magazines and museum catalogs where she writes about photography, museums, and material culture. From 2008-2019, she was a curator at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York City, where she established a major archive and organized several of the most widely traveling exhibitions in ICP's history.

Benton recently organized an exhibition of photographer and filmmaker Gillian Laub's contemporary images of racial segregation in the American South, Southern Rites, that will travel through 2024. Her landmark 2013 exhibition, Roman Vishniac Rediscovered, traveled to nine venues in five countries and was accompanied by an award-winning exhibition catalog (Prestel) and a monograph (Delpire/Actes Sud).

Benton has worked in museum exhibition and education departments for twenty-five years including The Getty Museum, The RISD Museum, Harvard University Art Museums, The Jewish Museum of Florence, Italy, and The International Center of Photography. Her exhibitions have been presented at more than four dozen venues in ten countries. She recently collaborated with Sara Kay Gallery in New York City on a series of contemporary photography exhibitions.

She is the founder and director of the Jews and Photography Research Initiative, a non-profit collaborative of more than two hundred international curators, archivists, interdisciplinary academics, and critics who are interrogating the unique contribution of Jews to the history of the medium of photography. Her next book will be an anthology of seminal texts on Jews and Photography, published by Aperture.

Benton is a graduate of Brown University, Harvard University, and the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. Next year she will be a Visiting Professor at Yale University.

ELIGIBILITY

CPW's annual Photography Now exhibition celebrates the plurality of photography. All photographic techniques and approaches are welcome, from analog to digital, fine art, directorial, narrative, documentary, political, social justice, identity, portrait, landscape, still life, mixed media incorporating photography, photographic installations, digital imaging, and collage! Submissions are accepted from all over the world. Professional, amateur, and student artists are all welcome to apply.

Photography Now showcases current trends in photography. Submitted photographs should, therefore, have been created in the last five years or be part of an ongoing long-term project. All themes are welcomed, however, this year’s juror Maya Benton is especially interested in work that interacts and responds to our current moment of isolation alongside the yearning to connect and the need for human contact.

PRIZES

Director's Choice Purchase Award: One photograph will be selected by the Executive Director and purchased for CPW's Permanent Print Collection.

All artists selected for the exhibition will receive a one-year CPW Advanced Membership, which includes a Portfolio Review with CPW's Curatorial Staff among other exclusive benefits.

NEW: COMPLIMENTARY ACCESS TO OUR PROFESSIONAL PRACTICES ARTIST NETWORK (PPAN)

CPW is excited to offer everyone who submits an application, access to our 2020 PPAN recordings, a $105 value, for free. PPAN was created to help demystify the art of promotion, outreach, and professional practices so that artists can become active agents in their own success. The recordings feature in-depth sessions by the talented Doug Menuez, Jacquette M. Timmons, and Miriam Romais, who address how to overcome creative, financial, and promotional challenges and develop professional practices that nurture the artist's career for years to come. Upcoming PPAN sessions will expand on these topics and continue to build the tools that artists can utilize throughout their practice and careers.

After you complete your Photography Now submission, you will receive a Vimeo link and password in your confirmation email from Submittable that will enable you to access the recordings as soon as you are ready to watch. We look forward to seeing you!
