Consilience of Art & Science

ELIGIBILITY AND MEDIA: This exhibit is open to all artists and scientists, regardless of residence, who wish to exhibit original 2D and 3D work in any medium, related to the intersection between art and science. This includes photography, drawing, textiles, painting, sculpture, video, and mixed media. Dimension restriction is at the discretion of the jurors.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

All submissions should be online at www.pencegallery.org.  A vital part of the submission is the artist’s statement (not to exceed 150 words), which should clearly explain how the work relates to the connection between art and science. The statement may be displayed with the accepted work. Work must be available for the whole run of the exhibit; no substitutions are accepted.
 

APPLY ONLINE:  Visit the Pence’s website www.pencegallery.org, click on Call to Artists, and apply directly on our site by 5 PM, Dec. 15th. No hand-delivered applications will be accepted.

DELIVERY OF ACCEPTED WORK:  Accepted work may be hand-delivered or shipped and insured by the artist to the Pence Gallery, 212 D Street, Davis, CA 95616. Expenses for insurance and shipping to and from the Gallery are the responsibility of the artist.

ENTRY FEES: $35/40 non-Pence members (non-refundable) entry fee via credit card, check, or PayPal for up to three works of art. Fees will be used for expenses and awards related to the exhibition.

MERIT AWARDS: Cash awards will be given out at the discretion of the jurors, and include 1^st, 2^nd, and 3^rd prizes.

JURORS: Jiayi Young is an Assistant Professor of Design at the University of California, Davis. Her inquiries lie within the field of digital media with an emphasis on the cross-disciplinary areas of design that integrates art and science with cutting edge technology. Her current research and creative work are focused on constructing data-driven sensor-enabled interfaces, installations, real-time projection graphics, participatory performances, and immersive environments in cultural and public places with a goal of engaging the public in social dialogue. Using multidisciplinary approaches, her work examines contemporary society including the culture of consumption, the programming and exploitation of the feminine, cultural assimilation, and personal identity. Jiayi Young has published and exhibited nationally and internationally, including Ars Electronica, the International Symposium of Electronic Art; the Leonardo Electronic Almanac; Hall of Science, New York; the United Nation’s Fourth Conference on Women, Beijing; the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg; and Moltkerei Werkstatt, Cologne.

Helen Donis-Keller, Ph.D. is the Michael E. Moody Professor of Biology and Art at Olin College of Engineering in Needham, Massachusetts. She received an MFA in Studio Art from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and Tufts University and Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Harvard University. Her teaching as well as her artwork, which has been exhibited nationally and internationally, integrate the fields of biology and art.

LOCATION: The Pence is a nonprofit art gallery, established in 1975, whose mission is to educate and inspire the community by exhibiting high caliber art by local and regional artists. The Consilience exhibit is a biannual display featuring innovative science-infused work, and will be displayed in the Pence’s Main Gallery space, measuring 1000 sq. ft., with 12’ ceilings, lit by a dramatic glass tower.

SALES: Sales are encouraged. The Pence Gallery will retain a 50% commission on work in the exhibit that is sold. Prices quoted on the entry form may not be changed after acceptance into the show.
