Mivos/Kanter String Quartet Composition Prize 2018
Mivos Quartet is pleased to announce the eighth annual Mivos/Kanter String Quartet Composition Prize. The competition is designed to promote works of talented emerging composers currently residing in the United States. Its winner will receive a $300 cash prize, a $100 travel stipend (if applicable), and a performance of the submitted piece in New York during Mivos Quartet’s 2018-19 season. The Mivos/Kanter Prize is made possible through the generous support of Carl Kanter.
Application Guidelines
Eligibility: Eligible composers are those currently residing in the United States who are in the early to middle stages of developing an international career and for whom this prize would represent a significant career opportunity.
Application Fee: $10. Payment accepted online via PayPal. Please send to mivosquartet@gmail.com and include applicant's name in the subject line.
How to apply: Applications will only be accepted via email to mivoskanterprize@gmail.com.
Composers must include the following materials as email attachments:
• Cover letter (PDF or MS Word format) that includes applicant's name, address, phone number, and email, plus the title, duration, and year of the composition entered.
• Artistic resumé or CV
• Full score (PDF format only, do not include parts): composer's name should not be on the score, as scores will be reviewed anonymously.
It is strongly encouraged that composers also include these additional materials in their application:
• Audio recording of the piece (MP3 preferable, though MIDI rendering is acceptable)
• Program notes
Compositions must be scored for two violins, viola, and cello, and may include electronics, amplification, and/or multimedia. Works may not exceed 30 minutes in length.
Submissions must be time-stamped by July 1, 2018, 11:59pm EST.
The competition will consist of two rounds. Applicants will receive an email confirming receipt of application fee and materials. A maximum of ten finalists will be notified via email by August 15, 2018. Finalists will be required to submit hard copies of their scores and parts via postal mail by September 7, 2018. The winner will be announced on September 30, 2018.
