TRANSITION – International Open Call for analogue photography

Fotogalerie Friedrichshain and analogueNOW! are pleased to announce their first curatorial collaboration, and invite film photographers and artists working with analogue techniques to participate in their upcoming international group exhibition on the theme « Transition ».

Either individual or collective, social or environmental, gradual or brutal, unexpected or chosen, a transition can be defined as a process of change, from a beforeness to an afterwards. Transitions can happen on different levels simultaneously: for example, while climate change is a complex transition, its effects can be observed in different places, contexts and scales. Similarly, social evolutions are reflected in personal lives, and vice versa an individual’s experience of change can pave the way to a larger process. 

If the notion of transition is inherent in all forms of life, our present days seem to be characterized by an acceleration of history, so that some transitions once only observable with the distance of time now seem to be perceptible on the scale of a human’s lifetime. This exhibition is intended as a moment of deceleration, a breath necessary to think about recent and ongoing transitions.

The exhibition will showcase analogue photography projects focused on narrating change, capturing development or decline, and witnessing or challenging the turn of events. We give the topic free for interpretation and welcome other readings of the theme. The submitted projects should be recent: either ongoing or completed in the past 5 years maximum. Long-term projects started years ago and recently completed (within the past 5 years) or still ongoing are accepted. In this sense, works that are based on archival material can be submitted.
