Roy and Helen Hall Memorial Library Reimagined

Roy and Helen Hall Memorial Library Reimagined is a joint project between the City of McKinney and the McKinney Arts Commission (MAC).

This call for artists is open to all area photographers and multi-media artists, art faculty and students at colleges and universities.

Applicants are invited to submit their artwork (photography or digital art) for a custom design that will be translated into a perforated metal panel on the exterior space of the new planetarium.

The panel will cover the curvature of the dome, as well as a flat panel covering two stories of the library façade on the northwest corner of the building.

Artwork must represent the mission of the Hall Memorial Library: “We serve our community by providing access to materials and experiences that educate, inform, and entertain.”

This is an opportunity to have art that shows the unique experiences available in the new library space.

The artist will be compensated $5,000 for the design and use of artwork. The selected finalist will work closely with city staff and metal fabricators on commissioned piece.

Due to the highly public nature of the building, no nudity nor highly controversial art can be shown.

The McKinney Arts Commission manages coordination with the City of McKinney to ensure all legal requirements are met and a liability waiver will need to be signed.

Submissions are evaluated by the MAC and the City staff prior to acceptance.

• Images should clearly represent the library’s mission, “We serve our community by providing access to materials and experiences that educate, inform, and entertain.”
• Please complete the application fully, including artist statement, and information about the image submitted.
• Applications are reviewed by MAC and the City of McKinney. Accepted artists will be contacted with more information regarding contract terms, and exhibition terms.

REVIEW PROCESS:
Finalists will be paid a $1,000 stipend to create a design-based direction given by the McKinney Arts Commission that will closely resemble the aforementioned metal panel artwork.
• Artwork is considered solely on the images submitted – high-quality photos are recommended
• The Artist Statement should describe the submitted piece. material and technique that explains the body of work well AND a value range for the artist's work.
• Decision by MAC and the City of McKinney are final

NOTIFICATION:
• Approved Artists will be notified by email whether their application is accepted or not.

• If you have a website with images of current work, please include the link as well.

TIMELINE
• Friday, September 5th – Application opens
• Monday, October 6th – Application closes at 5 p.m.
• Monday, October 20th – Notifications sent to finalists
• Monday, November 17th – Deadline for finalist to submit commissioned design
• Monday, November 24th – Finalist notified
