Exhaustion: How to find potential in states of inaction? 

This year APRIA wants to investigate the creative possibilities to be found in states of exhaustion and inaction. We welcome artistic research (academic, artistic, or process-based) that can be published as text, but also image essays, film and sound contributions.

Submissions are open to ArtEZ students and alumni as well as external/international artists and researchers. The deadline for sending submission is 23 January 2023.

About the theme:

We have entered collective burnout.

It feels as though we are exhausted by lurching from crisis to crisis: climate change, racial injustice, Covid-19, war and energy shortages. Our readiness to find immediate solutions is wearing out and we wonder if the system is broken.

Perhaps, instead of despairing and looking for quick solutions, we reflect on the potential that could grow from this feeling of exhaustion. What happens if we don't act to fix things, but wait, refuse, or turn to something else? What happens when we listen to our exhausted bodies and the thresholds of unconscious processes such as resting, sleeping, grieving, waiting? Do we find creative opportunities there?

APRIA (ArtEZ Platform for Research Interventions of the Arts) is a digital publishing platform that features the open-access and peer-reviewed, APRIA Journal, and showcases the latest artistic research from ArtEZ and beyond. APRIA Platform curates high-impact essays, image and sound contributions that examine art and interventions of the arts in relation to science and society. An annual Open Call encourages students, artists, and researchers affiliated with ArtEZ to submit their own contributions. APRIA is an initiative of ArtEZ University of the Arts, ArtEZ Press and ArtEZ studium generale.
