Eligibility:

This residency provides an opportunity for an artist to execute a new body of work, evolve an existing body of work, or develop a project in the CHAW Darkroom and Photography space. The residency offers up to twelve weeks of time and space to an artist or team of artists to experiment and realize new work in our darkroom and photographic facilites. The selected resident(s) will be expected to begin work in November 2019. The residency culminates in a solo exhibition of work produced during the residency in March 2020 in the CHAW Gallery.

The darkroom has five Beseler condenser enlargers and the necessary chemistry to print silver gelatin photographs and to develop traditional black and white films. The room will support some alternative chemistry processes as well, and has a UV exposure box available. The Resident Artist would need to provide their own chemistry for anything other than a traditional black and white process. Residents will also have access to the large format digital printing facilities, which include an Epson 7890.

Qualified applicants are professional individual artists or collaborative artist teams over the age of 18; the program is not designed for undergraduate students or commercial artists. Artists must be available to work in the CHAW darkroom during the length of the residency. CHAW will not provide housing for Darkroom Resident artists.

Artists working in all media are welcome to apply, but we require proposed projects to include a photographic practice.

THE RESIDENT ARTIST WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE FOLLOWING DURING THEIR RESIDENCIES:
-Work in the darkroom/photographic facilities at CHAW for a minimum of 10 hours/week.
-Present an artist talk, workshop, screening, and/or other mutually agreed upon public event.
-Create documentation of the artist’s creative process during the course of the residency.
This might take the form of blogging, video, journal, or social media, to be confirmed in conversation with the artist.
-Bi-weekly check-ins with the Darkroom Residency Manager
-Exhibit work produced during the residency in the main floor gallery space at CHAW

CHAW WILL PROVIDE
       -A $200 stipend
-The Darkroom facilities and accompanying black and white photo chemistry
-The Digital facilities including flatbed scanner, Canon Pro 100, and Epson 7890
       -Print and social media promotion
       -Month long solo exhibition
-Opening reception for the public with refreshments
-Refreshments, if appropriate, for workshop or other public event
