Call for Proposals for a Public Work of Art  The Button Project 

Bristol Community College and its Holocaust and Genocide Center, located in Fall River, Massachusetts, invite proposals from artists and artist teams for a significant public artwork. This project involves incorporating a collection of 1.5 million buttons, each symbolizing a child murdered during the Holocaust. Artists are encouraged to utilize the entire collection, with preference given to proposals that do so. The project’s central aim is to honor the memory of these children while simultaneously raising awareness about the horrors of the Holocaust, fostering reflection, education, and dialogue within the community.

The selected artwork will serve not only as a memorial but also as a catalyst for thought and learning, inviting the community and visitors alike to engage with the historical significance of this tragic period. The work will be situated in an outdoor space on the college campus, ensuring that it becomes a visible and meaningful part of the daily life of students, staff, and the wider public.

Eligibility

We welcome applications from individual artists and artist teams who meet the following criteria. Proposals will be accepted through December 31, 2024:

• Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and may include professional artists, sculptors, emerging talents, and creative teams from diverse backgrounds.
• Preference will be given to those with experience in large-scale public art projects and working with unconventional materials.
• Applicants must demonstrate previous experience in creating outdoor, site-specific artwork and must be available to assist with the installation process on-site.

This project offers a unique opportunity for artists to create a profound public artwork that combines remembrance, creativity, and education.

Finalist's presentations: February 3-7, 2025
Winner announced: March 6, 2025
