CALL FOR CHOREOGRAPHERS
Applications are open for Small Plates Choreography Festival, a curated dance performance series to be presented on June 28 and 29, 2019 at 8:00 p.m. at Dogtown Dance Theatre in Richmond Virginia. Any choreographer interested in presenting work in an intimate venue in RVA is welcome to apply.
Dogtown Dance Theatre performance mainstage can seat approximately 100+ seats with additional floor seating available if needed. The dimensions of the performance area are approximately 33' wide x 32' deep with the use of wings and Marley floor. The performance is low-tech and somewhat informal to create a more intimate connection with the audience.
Ensemble dance works no longer than 10 minutes long will be considered, solos works no longer than 8 minutes. If your work is longer than our time limits, please edit your video to show how the work will be adjusted to fall within the constraints. Work that is over time will not be considered. Completed work will be given priority over works-in-progress or proposed work.
The Friday performance will include student dance work, either created by student choreographers, or by professional choreographers performed by students. Student choreographers should be at least 15 years old by March 1, 2018, and student dancers should be in high school this year. A limited number of slots will be reserved for professional companies in the Friday show.
Saturday's performance will mainly feature professional artists with limited space for student work. All companies should indicate their availability in the application form.
Small Plates creates a growth environment by making space for feedback sessions with the audience after each performance. All performers and choreographers are expected to remain on-site to participate in the Q&A. Local dance and artistic professionals are encouraged to attend as audience members and bring their voices to this conversation, and to provide choreographers with valuable feedback and networking opportunities. This artist/audience interface is what makes Small Plates truly special.
Please submit your video by uploading it to YouTube, Vimeo or another video service online, and include the link in your application. Do not email your video to Small Plates. Applications without a video link will not be considered.
An application fee of $20.00 per piece is required. Please pay via PayPal using the following link:
paypal.me/smallplatesdance/20
We are not able to accept other forms of payment. Your fee must be paid before your work will be considered.
Choreographers who have their work chosen will be given one complimentary ticket to each performance, and are expected to help populate the audience by bringing at least two paid patrons to each performance in which their work appears. Choreographers will receive a video and photographs of their work after the show.
Dancers and choreographers must be available for technical rehearsal at 4:00 on performance days - please be prepared to plan accordingly, especially for the Friday performance.
The deadline to apply is APRIL 1. You will be notified by email on or before April 15 with our decision of acceptance or rejection. If your piece is accepted, you will have one week after you receive our email to submit your program information, technical information, publicity photos, and sound file.
To apply, please complete the entire form on this page and pay the application fee. Incomplete or unpaid applications will not be considered.
All work will be adjudicated by a panel of career choreographers and dance professionals holding BFA's/MFA's from university dance programs across the nation, and experienced in Dance, Production and Mixed Media Arts.
