John Paul Fauves Scope Basel!

John Paul Fauves will be exhibiting a selection of works in this years Scope fair in Basel with Milan based gallery & members club 'One Arts Club'. 

John Paul Fauves is a Costa Rican contemporary artist living and working in San José, Costa Rica. In his paintings he engages questions of identity as they relate to art history, as well as our everyday interactions with mainstream culture and social media.

Greatly inspired by modernist masters as well as pop-artists, Fauves mixes fragments of different iconic images in vivid and colourful compositions. Fauves’ neo pop-expressionist paintings take on a disorienting effect due to his technique of layering, cutting out, and collaging elements of pop-cultural images to a point where they become, not unrecognisable, but perversions of the familiar that ask the viewer to question what they think they know.

Although Fauves began painting at an early age as a student under the instruction of the influential modern artist Joaquin Rodriguez del Paso, he didn’t begin exhibiting internationally until 2017. He took a hiatus from the arts to train in business, but never stopped painting, and after a period of hedonistic self-destruction putting oil to canvas has finally become his primary occupation.

Of his experimental and highly eclectic style, Fauves says, “art is an expression from the soul, and the soul is something limitless. This is why I am always searching for different elements to bring into the work.”

Fauves has exhibited his work in New York, LA and Europe. His solo exhibitions include A Loss of Innocence (2017) and The Mickey Me Collection (2017) at Guy Hepner, New York City, Meir Gallery, Belgium. This year, he will participate in Scope Basel, ARCO Madrid and Art Palm Beach in Miami. He will also be exhibiting at w22 Galeria in San José, as part of a group exhibit at Imitate London entitled Down the Rabbit Hole, and the Papi Chulo group exhibition at the Krause Gallery in New York City. His paintings have also been featured in Vogue Italia and Dansk Magazine.

He is currently represented by JM Art Management in Los Angeles.
