CITYarts Always In Bloom project at Urban Assembly School for Green Careers

Deadline: October 29th, 2018

Interviews: October 29th – November 2nd, 2018

This project is a collaboration between CITYarts and the Urban Assembly School for Green Careers. CITYarts is planning to
create a mosaic with professional artists, students, and community youth.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
A. Located in the Upper West Side, this is the first year project out of 2 years consisting of designing multiple garden
elements in collaboration with the local youth using paint and mosaic:
1. Designing and creating a mosaic on the concrete wall surrounding the aquaculture pond
2. Creating and painting a design for the landscaping fabric over the pond
3. Painting the metal barricades
4. Painting a design for the storage shed, front gate, and pagoda
B. Under the CITYarts Global HeART Warming program, the artist will lead workshops in which youth will discuss nature,
raise awareness to the speed of climate change, and draw attention to healthy eating and sustainability. With guidance
from the artist, students will create visual works based on their ideas.
C. Based on the drawings and ideas of participants in workshops, the artist will create a mosaic design proposal. The artist
will also collaborate with the students to create a design proposal for the other garden elements.
D. CITYarts will review the proposal with the artist before the final drawing is submitted.
E. The artist will lead the youth group in the mosaic mural process, which includes preparation of the wall, installing mosaic
tile with adhesive, applying grout, and providing instructions for maintenance, etc.
F. This project will start around November 5th, 2018: the artist will lead 2-hour workshops (flexible) once or twice a week in
the school November-March (not when the school is closed) and will work in the school garden April-June. The schedule will
be discussed with the artist at the interview.

APPLICATION MATERIALS:
1. 5 high-res images of your recent work (no more than 5 MB in total)
2. Résumé or CV
3. 1-page statement outlining your professional approach and experience working with youth

REQUIREMENTS:
1. Experience is required.
2. The artist will be responsible for leading workshops with youth ages 12 to 18, creating the mockup for the mosaic and the
signage inspired by youth’s artwork, and supervising participants and volunteers.
3. FLEXIBILITY is important. The artist must be open to changing the mockup according to the panel’s suggestions, as this is
a collaborative project.
4. The final design will be decided after youth workshops are completed at the end of January 2019.
5. The artist’s compensation is $4,000-$6,000, based on the duration of the project and experience of the applicant. There will
be a separate materials budget.
6. This is a WORK FOR HIRE; the copyright will be owned by CITYarts as the author of the work pursuant to 17 U.S.C.S.
201(b).

REVIEW PROCESS:
Stage 1: A panel of art and community professionals will select 5 semi-finalists October 29th – November 2nd, 2018.
Stage 2: Semi-finalists meet at the CITYarts’ office with panel members, to explore themes and answer questions. Artists
will be notified of the final selection the week of November 5th, 2018. Learn more at www.cityarts.org
