About us:

The KW Institute for Contemporary Art is dedicated to addressing central questions of our time through the production, presentation, and mediation of contemporary art. Through exhibitions and a wide variety of event formats, the KW consistently picks up on current trends in national and international contemporary art and cultural discourse and actively develops them further in collaboration with artists, institutions, and through commissioned works. KW does not have its own collection, which allows the KW team a high degree of flexibility in programming and audience outreach.

About the position:

The KW Institute for Contemporary Art has a position available for a two-year research traineeship, which will be completed in the Education and Outreach department in the first year and in the Curatorial office in the second year. Thanks to the practical orientation of the training, the traineeship offers not only scientific research, the development of educational formats, and conceptual and curatorial work for the artistic program, but also in-depth experience and knowledge of the organization, planning, and implementation, as well as the administrative handling of international and regional artistic projects and events.

Focus areas within the field of work:

  • Collaboration in the areas of education and outreach, as well as outreach activities
  • Research and collaboration in the development, planning, and implementation of museum education concepts
  • Supporting workshops in the field of education and outreach
  • Maintaining contact with museums, institutions, galleries, and partner organizations in the field of education and outreach
  • Assistance in planning and implementing exhibitions, including accompanying programs
  • Supervision and support of participating artists, performers, and other cultural professionals
  • Development, monitoring, and maintenance of exhibition projects, including loans and transportation
  • Assistance in the area of public relations
  • Collaboration in initiatives for diversity, inclusion, and sustainability
  • Obtaining quotes and preparing orders and contracts
  • Supporting the respective departmental activities as well as daily office administration and international office communication and correspondence (telephone, email, internet, written correspondence)

Your qualifications:

  • A successfully completed university degree in a museum-related subject (e.g., cultural or art studies, museum education, and/or related subjects) at a university with a diploma, master's degree, or a master's degree in a correspondingly accredited program at a university of applied sciences is required
  • Good knowledge of art history and interest in contemporary art and current developments in the international art scene and its discourses, intercultural and transdisciplinary competence, and willingness to familiarize yourself thoroughly with the topics
  • Initial experience in the fields of exhibition work/educational outreach and project management is desirable
  • Very good written and oral communication skills and the ability to write texts that are easy to understand
  • Confident written and spoken German and English.
  • Confident use of MS Office and common digital applications
  • Careful, independent, and reliable way of working
