Self-directed Music Residency
Application Deadline July 29, 2026
Overview
This residency offers space and focused time to individual musicians and bands/ensembles of all genres to research, create, and develop your own projects in Banff Centre’s unrivalled campus and mountain environment.
Along with the freedom to focus on artistic process and structure your time around the needs of your project, you will receive mentorship from well-established faculty, including Luca Fogale. The diverse range of artistic influences across the three weeks, along with the opportunity for interaction and collaboration amongst peers will lead to new discoveries and transformative experiences.
Description
This residency offers a unique opportunity for musicians 18+ at all stages of their career and across all genres to:
- Research, develop, and create their own project - taking risks, testing ideas and exploring creative practices in a safe, collaborative environment.
- Have 24 hour access to one of our personal music studios.
- Focus on creative exploration and experimentation through peer and mentor led group or one-on-one sessions.
- Be inspired by fellow participants and collaborate with musicians working across diverse genres and disciplines.
- Present new material and performance approaches in public concerts.
- Self-record in your own studio to independently document and disseminate your work.
- Collaborate with audio engineers, faculty and participants on recording projects, as available.
- Belong to an expanded artistic community at the Banff Centre, fostering lasting networking and support throughout your career.
- Participants may also sign up to additional walk and day trips within Banff National Park as well as campus-wide activities organized by our Participant Resources team.
This residency will also coincide with the Audio Recording Engineer PTP (Professional Training Program) program. Depending on the scope of the projects, a limited number of studio recording possibilities will be offered by the Audio Recording Engineer PTP (Professional Training) program for BMiR participants.
Requirements
The program is ideal for individual musicians, ensembles, bands, composers, and music researchers to spend focused time working on a specific project; creating new works; preparing for concerts, auditions or competitions; or exploring and researching innovative ideas.
Participants should be comfortable working autonomously in an unstructured environment to benefit the most from the program. Musicians at all levels are encouraged to apply.
Participants must be available to attend the program and elements for its entire duration; variable participation dates will not be considered.
