The Art Explora x Cité internationale des arts residency programme gives artists and researchers from around the world the opportunity to develop research and creative work in the heart of Paris, in connection with the French artistic and professional scene. It encourages creation in all its forms while facilitating its dissemination to the greatest number of people. The work of the residents focuses on the themes of scientific and technological exploration and addresses the major social and environmental issues of our time.

Art Explora has 8 residential studios in the Cité internationale des arts of Montmartre and welcomes about twenty artists in residency each year.

Two programs are proposed:

SOLO Programme

For artists only.

Each resident will benefit from:

  • A 6-month residency at the Cité internationale des arts in Montmartre

  • A studio apartment of about 50m2 (only one double bed), fully equipped and furnished

  • A grant of 1,000 euros per month

  • A production grant of up to 3,000 euros, delivered upon justification and according to the specificity of the project

  • A round trip to the residence

DUO Programme

For a collaboration between an artist and a researcher or scientist, or an artist collective.

Each resident will benefit from:

  • A 3-month residency at the Cité internationale des arts in Montmartre

  • A studio apartment of about 50m2 (only one double bed), fully equipped and furnished

  • A grant of 1,000 euros per month

  • A production grant of up to 3,000 euros, delivered upon justification and according to the specificity of the project

  • A round trip to the residence

NB: Each studio is composed of one bedroom with a double bed, a workspace, a kitchen and a bathroom and can host one resident.

Both programmes are open to artists and researchers of all nationalities, with no age limit and who can justify a minimum of five years of professional activity.

Candidates are invited to propose a residency project that questions major contemporary issues, the links between art and science, new technologies and social and environmental issues.

Eligible artistic disciplines: visual arts, performing arts, digital art.

Eligible areas of research: humanities, social sciences, sciences, technological innovation & sustainable development, art criticism & exhibition curating.

Around 20 residents are selected each year. In addition to evaluating the candidate’s professional background, the members of the jury pay particular attention to the quality of the project, its link with the theme of the residency (the links between art, science, new technologies and social and environmental issues) and the importance of its location in France for the advancement of the research.

The selection committee is made up of leading figures from the world of art and research :

- Magalí Arriola (Mexico): Art critic and Director of the Museo Tamayo of Contemporary Art

- Diana Campbell Betancourt (USA & Bangladesh): Artistic Director of the Samdani Art Foundation and Chief Curator of the Dhaka Art Summit

- Emanuele Coccia (Italy): Philosopher and Associate Professor at EHESS

- Isabelle Gaudefroy (France): Deputy Artistic Director of the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain

- Simon Njami (Cameroon & Switzerland): Writer, curator, essayist and art critic.

Registration is free. Interested artists or researchers must submit an online project in English or French (no other language accepted) that includes:

  • A description of the artistic project or research that will be developed during the residency (general description, steps of the project…): 3500 characters max. (not including spaces) that can be accompanied by visuals

  • A cover letter that especially details the importance of being in France for your project (conceptual, geographical, practical, social... link): 2 pages max.
