The SPACE Programme 2023

Arts and Immersive Technology Artists Residency in Paris 24 June - 3 July.

APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN

The Performance Corporation is bringing the longest running multi-disciplinary artists residency in Ireland, The SPACE Programme, to the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris for the 2023 edition.

The SPACE Programme is a professional development residency for artists and creative technologists with a focus on collaboration across form and medium.

We have been delivering this highly successful residency since 2008, giving participants the opportunity to explore, re-examine and extend working practices, processes, ideas, partnerships and collaborations without pressure to create 'product' within a fixed time frame. Since 2018, The SPACE Programme has had a specific focus on augmented, mixed and virtual reality technologies, as well as binaural sound exploration, Motion Capture and more; allowing participants to develop skills in storytelling and immersive interaction in these new and exciting media.

As well as hands-on work with the technologies on offer, guest facilitators and cultural leaders from France and further afield will guide professional development and inter-disciplinary collaborations. Participants will also engage with local cultural offerings and explore new artistic contexts and creative horizons, allowing for new connections and collaborations.

“With The SPACE Programme in 2008, we pioneered what was to become the longest running International, collaborative multi-disciplinary artist’s residency in Ireland. We are so proud of all the explorations, connections, commissions and work that has emerged since its inception, and delight in sometimes working with, but always following and supporting the work of artists that have come through the programme. We have focused SPACE on the arts and immersive tech crossover since 2018 and are delighted to take the residency to Paris in 2023, in collaboration with the Centre Culturel Irlandais. Through this shift, we aim to further international connections and opportunities for those involved and to immerse the group in creating in the exceptional cultural context of Paris.”

- Jo Mangan, Director The Performance Corporation.

APPLY NOWSPACE is Ireland's longest running multi-disciplinary artist's residency. The SPACE Programme has also sown the seeds for numerous full-scale projects, as well as long-lasting collaborations between artists.

“The SPACE Programme was absolutely one of the best experiences I have had as a new media artist. With technology changing so fast it is very easy to feel overwhelmed. Having a space to just play and explore without any pressure is an immensely important opportunity for artists. I wish there were more residencies like that.”  - Isa Juchniewicz [Visual Artist - New Media/Performance Art]

“Aaaaaaaaaghhhh such a great experience to connect people from very different disciplines at the intersections between our work. Like bashing atoms together in a super collider, to create weird and otherwise improbable new things.” - Ciara Tamay [UX Designer - Virtual Reality / Virtual Experiences]

“As a collaborative theatre maker who strives to create live immersive experiences, the chance to spend time learning and upskilling in the most up to date immersive technology, to experiment and play has been so inspiring. The networks and connections I've made both nationally and internationally are brilliant, along with feeling much more confident about where my practice can and will meet the digital world.” - James Riordan [Writer & Theatre Maker]

“Access to mixed reality technology is prohibitively expensive for independent artists. This programme created a structured collaborative environment with state-of-the-art equipment backed up by technical experts, removing a huge barrier for entry into creative applications for VR/AR and kickstarting a whole series of artistic collaborations.” - Hugh Farrell [Writer, producer, dramaturg - immersive experiences / live events]

"a place where creative minds can make manifest evolutionary movements for the world, when we as people and as producers of ideas, have the opportunity to really understand what we want and what, indeed, we are capable of.” - Emily Aoibheann [Performance Artist]

The programme has given me an invaluable opportunity to reengage with my own artistic practice and engage with irish and international artists in a way I would not normally be able to.” - Lian Bell [Artist/Set designer/Arts Manager]

"I would  like to see other residencies learn from the ideas, momentum and methodologies of the SPACE  Residency programme as it facilitated a group dynamic that was supportive, highly productive and challenging" - Tamsin Snow  [Visual Artist]

The application process is now open, and submissions are welcome from individual Irish and International practitioners in all disciplines.

Closing Date for applications:
Midnight, Sunday 22 January 2023
