Palermofoto launches a last-minute open call for “casa & putìa”

Due to a recent last-minute cancellation, Palermofoto is opening a short-notice open call for its art residency program casa & putìa.
This call is intended for artists who are available on short notice — particularly those already based in Europe or able to travel easily.

casa & putìa is an art residency program aimed at professional photographers who want to broaden their knowledge of ancient printing techniques, as well as visual artists with the same curiosity.

The program is born from the desire to share knowledge of antique photographic techniques with a broader community of artists, encouraging the exchange of ideas and the discovery of new forms of expression. Through this residency, we aim to create a dialogue between past and present, offering a space where experimentation and tradition intertwine in unexpected ways.

casa & putìa is also an opportunity to expand Palermofoto's network beyond Italy, welcoming artists from around the world and fostering reciprocal cultural enrichment. The residency invites participants to explore historical photographic printing techniques while contributing fresh perspectives and artistic sensibilities.

What we offer

Duration: 10 days, with arrival scheduled on Sunday

Accommodation:
Private room with a double bed (suitable for a single artist or a duo/couple), with access to bathroom and kitchen 

Intensive Training:
Every day, for at least 5 hours (or more), residents will explore historical photographic techniques, including:

• Cyanotype – iron-based process producing deep blue tones
• Van Dyke – rich brown prints using silver and iron salts
• Salted Paper – one of the earliest photographic printing techniques
• Wet Collodion – glass plate process known for its precision and depth

Facilities and Equipment:
Access to professional photo studio, darkroom, library, and all necessary materials for the workshops

Final Event – Casa Aperta:
At the end of the residency, participants will present their work in an open studio event

Membership: Included in Palermofoto® Cultural Association

Location

The residency takes place in Palermo, Sicily (Italy) — an inspiring Mediterranean city rich in history, architecture, and cultural stratification.

Costs

The participation fee is €1350, including:

• Accommodation
• All materials for the workshops
• Access to facilities and training
• Final exhibition production and installation

For duos, an additional €500 is required.

Residency periods

This short-notice open call refers to the following available periods:

• May (3-12 may / 17-26 may)
• June (7-16 june / 21-30 june)
