Trestle Art Space Residency Program Spring 2020

The Residency Program at Trestle Art Space is a 6-month, advisor-led studio residency designed to support emerging artists who seek professional development, critical feedback, and community while they find a foothold in the New York art world. Centered around professional and personal growth, program sessions and advisor mentorship provide practical tools to guide residents towards a successful career in the arts. Offering exhibition, open studio, and speaking opportunities, the program is meant to increase the visibility and profile of residents by providing a platform to present their work to the public.

Professional Development:

Artist Essentials. Residents will work closely with their advisor on crafting their artist statement, CV, bio, and website to best represent their work in a clear and concise way.

Mastering the application. Guidance will be offered to navigate the world of art submissions including feedback on applications to open calls, residencies, and other opportunities.

Artwork Documentation. Artists will learn the skills to properly photograph and edit images of their artwork through participation in a workshop.

Exhibition Opportunities:

Exhibition at Trestle Gallery. Every year we partner with Trestle Gallery, located at our Sunset Park location, for a studio member exhibition. This year’s exhibition will take place in May.

Small Group & Solo Exhibitions. Trestle Art Space is also home to two project spaces available for small exhibitions, including solo shows. Residents are welcome to submit their work for consideration at any time during the 6-month program.

Residency Exhibition. All residents get the opportunity to participate in a group exhibition held during Gowanus Open Studios, an event that brings 100s of people through our space.

Curatorial Projects. Residents will have opportunities to curate pop up exhibitions at our Greenwood location.

Critical Feedback:

Group Critiques. Residents will receive a range of critical feedback on their practice from three advisor-led critiques. Additionally,Trestle Gallery’s Visiting Artist Residents host twice monthly Open Critiques that residents are encouraged to attend.

One on One Feedback. Residents will have the opportunity to seek individual feedback on their work during scheduled office hours with Trestle Gallery’s Visiting Artist Residents.

Community & Networking:

Open Studio Events. Residents will have the opportunity to open their space for local artists, curators, and collectors to peek into their practice during local open studio events.

Artist Talks. Residents and studio members are invited to share their work, skills, and knowledge with the public in an open and supportive environment. Artists are free to discuss a range of topics, from their practice and projects to critical discourse.

Financial Information:

The program fee includes a private studio and all programming for the 6-month residency. The fee is $3,000 plus a security deposit of $200 (returned at the completion of the program) and a materials fee of $35. Residents can pay $500/month or in a lump sum at the start of the program. A $500 discount is offered to participants who pay in advance for the 6 months. For residents choosing the monthly option, an initial payment of first month/last month/damage deposit/materials fee ($1,235) is required upon signing of the contract. For residents paying in advance, a one-time payment of $2,735 is required upon signing of contract. **Please note we do not provide housing or visa sponsorship.

Spring 2020 Advisors:

Allison Kaufman

Allison Kaufman is a video artist and photographer whose work investigates societal performances, addressing issues of gender, vulnerability, and aspiration. She received her BFA in Film and TV from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and her MFA in Photography, Video, and Related Media from the School of Visual Arts. Solo exhibitions of her work have taken place at Trestle Projects in Brooklyn, HERE Arts Center in New York City, Real Art Ways in Hartford CT, and Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. Her work has also been exhibited at Julie Saul Gallery, Hendershot Gallery, Moore College of Art and Design, Albright College, and the Aqua Miami, VOLTA, and Affordable Art Fairs, among others. Kaufman is the recipient of the Paula Rhodes Memorial Award and an Alumni Scholarship Award from the School of Visual Arts, has been an artist-in-residence at Yaddo, the Center for Emerging Visual Artists, the Constance Saltonstall Foundation of the Arts, and Penland School of Crafts. Her work has been reviewed in the Huffington Post, the L Magazine, the Pittsburgh-Tribune Review, and Bomb Magazine’s BOMBlog. Kaufman teaches at a variety of institutions including Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. Most recently, she was a visiting resident artist at both the CATWALK Institute in Catskill, NY and Trestle Gallery in Brooklyn, NY.

Margie Neuhaus

Margie Neuhaus is an artist based in Brooklyn, whose work is inspired by the study of natural and manmade systems. She has had solo exhibitions in Wave Hill’s Sunroom Project Space (Bronx, NY) and at Safe-T-Gallery (Brooklyn, NY). Her work has been exhibited locally and nationally at venues such as Socrates Sculpture Park;P.S.122 Gallery,NewYork; A + D Gallery (Chicago); Islip Art Museum; Franconia Sculpture Park (Minnesota); Rockland Center for the Arts (West Nyack); Stone Quarry Hill Art Park, (Cazenovia, NY); Convergence XI (Providence, RI); and Fields Sculpture Park at Omi International Arts Center (Ghent, NY). Her exhibitions have been reviewed in the New York Times, Sculpture Magazine,Textile:The Journal of Cloth and Culture, and Ducts.org. Neuhaus has received residency fellowships from The MacDowell Colony, Socrates Sculpture Park,Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Sculpture Space, and Ragdale Foundation. Neuhaus received an MFA in Sculpture from Bard College. Neuhaus currently teaches at New Jersey City University and LaGuardia Community College. She was a professor for many years in the Art Department at The College of New Rochelle. Prior to that she taught in the undergraduate and graduate programs at CW Post Campus of Long Island University.

Keisha Scarville

Keisha Scarville weaves together themes dealing with transformation, place, and the unknown. She studied at the Rochester Institute of Technology and Parsons/The New School. Her work has shown at the Studio Museum of Harlem, The Institute of Contemporary Art Philadelphia, Rush Arts Gallery, BRIC Arts Media House, Lesley Heller Gallery, Contact Gallery in Toronto, Aljira Center for Contemporary Art, Center for Photography at Woodstock, the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute, Museum of Contemporary Diasporan Arts, Baxter St CCNY, Lightwork, and The Brooklyn Museum of Art. Scarville has taken part in residencies at Vermont Studio Center, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace Program, BRIC Workspace Residency Program, and Light Work Residency Program. Her work has been featured and reviewed in the New York Times, Vice, Transition, Nueva Luz, Small Axe, The Village Voice, and Hyperallgeric. Collections include the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. Currently, Scarville is an adjunct faculty member at the International Center of Photography and Parsons School of Art & Design in New York.
