The Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute Artists in Residence program (AIR) is an education-based residency which allows one emerging artist to live, work, and teach on the Munson-Williams and PrattMWP College of Art & Design campus in Utica, NY for one academic year.

The AIR program is designed for emerging artists or recent visual arts MFA graduates interested in art education in community arts and college curricula while receiving support to develop a vibrant, self-directed studio practice. 

Programming includes presenting a public lecture, teaching community arts education classes, holding a public open studio event, and designing and implementing accessible community projects with various departments on campus. Artists receive financial support, housing, meals, studio, and an exhibition in the Museum of Art. 

 THE RESIDENCY:

The 2022/23 call is for applicants in the discipline of CERAMICS. Artists who work in ceramics/pottery and understand higher ed principles of 3D and sculpture foundations. 

• Residency is nine months, August 15, 2022 through May 15, 2023.
• Call for artists rotates through disciplines each academic year. 
• One artist is in residence for the 2022/23 academic year. 
• Artists receive two stipend payments of $1,250 in September and in January for a total of $2,500.
• Ceramics artists receive a private studio in the ceramics building with 24/7 access along with usage of studio kilns and equipment.
• Paid fall and spring semester non-credit teaching opportunities in the Community Arts Education program; Paid PrattMWP College Program 3D/Foundations credit teaching opportunities**
• Fall artist talk, winter open studio, spring Museum of Art solo exhibition, and promotion for these events. 
• Furnished private apartment in the heart of the Munson-Williams campus.

ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The residency suits self-directed, motivated, community oriented ceramics artists that have an energetic willingness to work at routine ceramics studio duties as well as participate in campus and community life with genuine interest in gaining educational experience.

• Develop own artwork and studio practice.
• Resident Artists are responsible for working 20 hours a week in the ceramics facilities.
• Work with the Community Arts Education and Residency Director along with the Ceramics Coordinator prior to arriving to develop non-credit community ceramics classes to teach each semester for adults or teens. 
• Work with the Museum Education Department to imagine, design, and plan art projects for three to four community Art Alive Family Days or similar programming.
• Work with PrattMWP College of Art & Design Faculty and undergraduate student body with the potential to teach a credit course**
• Present a lecture of current work, open studio, and solo exhibition of new work during residency.
• Artists are responsible for transportation to and during residency and any additional costs of living. 

**PrattMWP credit course teaching opportunities are contingent on college enrollment, AIR experience, and are assigned at the discretion of the Chair and Dean.

STUDIO DETAILS + CERAMICS FACILITIES:

Studios are provided to resident artists. A ceramics  AIR is provided with a private studio space on the second floor of the ceramics facilities with 24/7 access.  

The pottery studio encompasses 3,500 square feet of a historic former carriage house and stables that now make up the Ceramics and Sculpture Studio Buildings. Arched windows, tiled walls, and decades of good energy make this studio aesthetically pleasing and is the best equipped ceramics facility in the area. Additionally, the adjoining kiln shed is equipped with a large salt kiln, downdraft kiln, and an anagama kiln. The shed is the hub for workshops and for learning the fundamentals of wood firing. The second floor is home to a pop-up ceramics gallery, faculty studios, and the Vincent R. Clemente Ceramic Resource Room, a library of 250 ceramic books, magazines, and DVD demos for research and inspiration.

Ceramics Specific Responsibilities:

• Resident Artists are responsible for working 20 hours a week in the ceramics facilities (This includes teaching community classes, studio support, and being present for open studio times) 
• Additional hours may be necessary for meetings, workshops, and special events.
• Other duties include assisting Instructors and students, firing kilns, mixing glazes, and general studio upkeep.
• Residents are representatives of Munson-Williams and are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner.
• Artists are responsible for bringing all specialty equipment, tools, and supplies used in their daily studio practice (including computers) to the residency. If an applicant has a special interest in facilities outside of the specific discipline, please indicate in the application form.
