NINE-MONTH RESIDENCY UPSTATE NY | PAINTING/DRAWING or MOTION GRAPHICS/ANIMATICS  | DEADLINE MARCH 2, 2020

Applications for the 2020/21 Artists in Residence program are now being accepted in PAINTING/DRAWING or MOTION GRAPHICS/ANIMATICS.  Applications may be submitted now through MONDAY, MARCH 2, 2020,  Midnight EST. 

The Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute Artists in Residence program (AIR) is an education-based residency which allows two emerging artists from different disciplines to live and work on the MWPAI and PrattMWP College of Art & Design campus in Utica, NY for one academic year.

The AIR program is designed for emerging artists or recent visual arts MFA graduates interested in art education in  community arts and college curriculums while receiving support to develop a vibrant, self-directed studio practice. Programming includes presenting a lecture to PrattMWP students and the public, teaching community arts education classes, holding a public open studio event, and designing and implementing accessible community projects at the Museum of Art. Artists receive financial support, housing, meals, studio, and two-person exhibition in the museum’s PrattMWP Gallery. 

 THE MWPAI RESIDENCY:

  • Disciplines are PAINTING/DRAWING or MOTION GRAPHICS/ANIMATICS
  • Residency is nine months, August 24, 2020 through May 24, 2021.
  • Call for artists rotates through disciplines each academic year. 
  • Two artists working in different media are in residence simultaneously.
  • Artists receive two stipend payments of $1,250 in September and in January for a total of $2,500
  • Fall and Winter session non-credit teaching opportunities in the Community Arts Education program; paid compensation as a Community Arts Education Instructor and subject to enrollment guidelines. 
  • Joint fall artists talk, winter open studio, spring Museum of Art exhibition, and promotion for these events. 
  • Work with Museum Education Department to develop community programming. 
  • Access to school facilities in your discipline.
  • Second floor studio space in the Tracy Street Studio building.
  • Furnished two-bedroom apartment with shared living and kitchen in the heart of the MWPAI campus.  
  • Cafeteria meal plan. (19 meals per week while college program is in session) 

ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Develop own artwork and self-directed studio practice in the provided studio space.
  • Participate in campus and community life with genuine interest in creative collaboration and education. 
  • Work with the Community Arts Education and Residency Director prior to arriving to develop non-credit community classes to teach each semester. (See Stipends and Pay) 
  • Present a lecture of current work, open studio, and joint exhibition of new work during residency.
  • Work with the Museum Education Department to imagine, design, and plan art projects for three to four community Art Alive Family Days. (See Stipends and Pay) 
  • Work with PrattMWP College of Art & Design Faculty and undergraduate student body with the potential to teach credit courses, contingent on enrollment.
  • Collaborate on one to two community projects as representatives of the AIR program. 
  • Artists must provide own materials and specialized equipment for personal studio practice and are responsible for transportation to and during residency and any additional costs of living. 

Disciplines rotate each academic year. An AIR could be accepted in two of the following media in future calls: Animation, Painting/Drawing, Ceramics, Jewelry/Metals, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Communications Design, and Video. Please check back each year.

STIPENDS + PAY (USD): 

AIR receive two guaranteed stipend payments of $1,250 in September and in January for a total of $2,500 to help offset the costs of living and supplies. 

AIR teaching non-credit classes and/or workshops in our Community Arts Education program will be paid compensation as a Community Arts Education Instructor. Classes are subject to enrollment guidelines which means they may be canceled if they do not reach minimum enrollment.  Opportunities to teach a credit bearing course in the PrattMWP program is dependent on enrollment. MWPAI provides up to $600 per artist of monetary support for the spring exhibition and up to $500 per artist towards shipping of artworks at the end of the residency.

MWPAI provides compensation for three to four Art Alive Family Day events, craft design, and help approx $200 per artist per event. 

MWPAI provides shared housing and utilities, studio, and a meal plan that covers 19 meals a week during PrattMWP semester.  MWPAI is not responsible for AIR transportation to and during residency or additional costs of living. 
 

HOUSING + MEALS:

Shared housing is provided to resident artists. Resident Artists share a spacious, furnished two-bedroom apartment in the heart of the MWPAI campus. Each will have a fully furnished lockable bedroom with closets and shared living area and kitchen. The apartment is equipped with some kitchen basics and wifi. Resident artists are responsible for their own laundry and should bring their own queen-sized bed linens, bed pillows, blankets, and towels. 

Please Note: The apartment is located on the second floor and is not handicapped accessible. The AIR program is unable to accommodate for  families, spouses, or long term guests at this time. The program and studios are intended for the artists awarded and selected by the jury.

A Cafeteria meal plan is also provided to each resident. Bon Appétit offers 19 meals a week when college semesters are in session.

STUDIOS + FACILITIES:

Studios are provided to resident artists. The AIR Studios at 601 Tracy Street are located in a brick studio building on the southern end of campus. Each studio area is roughly 650 square feet and is located on the second floor.  

Artists are responsible for bringing all specialty equipment, tools, and supplies used in their daily studio practice (including computers) to the residency. If an applicant has a special interest in facilities outside of the specific discipline, please indicate in the application form. Please find a brief overview of campus facilities HERE.
