Independent Residency: Leighton Artist Studios - Fall/Winter 2024/25

Overview
Leighton Artist Studio residencies are geared to professional artists working on major research-creation projects or new bodies of work. The program is best suited to artists who are self-motivated, focused, and wanting time and space for introspection. The Leighton Artist Studios comprise nine distinct architect-designed studios suitable for individual artists working in the following disciplines: 

Art of Piano

Immerse yourself in an artistic environment tailored for pianists seeking to advance their musicianship and careers. Explore the importance and connection between artistic vision and craft, focusing on what it means to be an artist. Hone the ability to listen. Bring genuine expression and unique perspectives into your music for authentic performances that connect with audiences. Delve into masterworks spanning historical to contemporary music and jazz with internationally celebrated artists.

Visual Arts - Banff Artist in Residence - Summer 2024

The Banff Artist in Residence program is designed for visual artists to focus on their practice in a supportive learning environment. Over five weeks, participants are encouraged to self-direct their research and time, as well as cultivate new directions in their work. The experience of artists in residence is further supported through individual studio visits with guest faculty and dialogue amongst peers.

The program encourages experimentation and risk-taking via access to shared production facilities and knowledgeable staff who are available to provide technical support and assistance.

Visual Arts Thematic Residency: Get LIT! Language, Image. Text

Led by faculty Joi Arcand, Whess Harman, August Klintberg, and Michael Turner, Visual Arts Thematic Residency – Get LIT! Language, Image, Text invites visual artists working in all mediums to explore language, image, words, and text through self-directed studio practice and research-creation.

This five-week residency offers a structured space where visual artists come together to create work and discuss the pertinent theme, as well as time and space to delve deeply into their practice while away from the constrains of everyday life.

Summer Writers Residency - 2024

Banff Centre’s Summer Writers Residency will provide writers space for the creative exploration of their writing practice. This 12-day self-directed residency offers the opportunity to work away from the constraints of everyday life. Delve deep into your creative project and take advantage of the artistic community of your peers around you.

Literary Journalism: Memoir - Summer 2024

This 12-day residency encourages the exploration of new ideas in non-fiction and experimentation in writing focusing on Memoir. Designed to challenge and stimulate, the program aims to inspire creative pieces of nonfiction and to assist the writers in their completion of manuscripts which explore memory, experience, and memoir. In this self-directed workshop-based residency, you will work closely with our esteemed faculty to expand your practice and focus on improving writing skills. A preeminent space for long-form journalism and creative non-fiction, this residency emphasizes the strengths of thorough and articulate non-fiction, distinctive storytelling, and literary devices. Work created in this program has been published in journals, magazines, newspapers, and in books
