The Silence Between — Book Signing by photographer Robert Birnbach

As part of The Cardinal Compass exhibition, BWAC is featuring the photographs of Robert Birnbach. He recently published a book entitled, 'The Silence Between: Photographs of Music in the Moment'  which captures the essence of live music through the art of photography. Birnbach eloquently seizes the ephemeral: the charged silence before a note, the intimate interplay between artist and instrument, and the unguarded expressions of musicians lost in their art.

The Creative Process

Take a peak into the creative process of the work by these exhibiting artists. They have indicated what inspired them and what steps they took to arrive at the finished artwork.

Opening Reception Saturday, June 1, 2024 from 1-6 pm. Exhibition on display June 1-23, 2024. Open weekends 1-6 pm.

Works on Paper

For many artists, the freedom and immediacy afforded by working on paper is instrumental to their practices, spawning new techniques and aesthetics, subjects and methods. Works On Paper, a national juried exhibition, encompasses a diverse range of media — from drawing, printmaking, painting, collage, and beyond. Far from being confined to studies and experiments, works on paper represent important modes of art-making in their own right.

Shirley Kaplan

Shirley Kaplan uses color and line to create an arena of figurative interaction. She works intuitively allowing abstract forms of heightened color to appear and build upon one another. Images evolve that depict the activated world and impulse of performance and life. From her early years in Paris to today her paintings are a visual diary of lived experience showing aspects of the worlds of the circus, cabaret, theatre, and festivals. The sidelines of a cabaret hall and the artificial glamor and onstage atmosphere evoke a feeling of a time and place.

The Cardinal Compass

The connection between the Carolinas and New York City is a strong one. This juried exhibition presents more than 50 artists who have a direct connection with North Carolina, whether living here or there. There is a broad representation of artists from all parts of the state, from the mountains to the coast.

Opening Reception Saturday, June 1, 2024 from 1-6 pm. Exhibition on display June 1-23, 2024. Open weekends 1-6 pm.

BWAC is seeking artists exploring the creative potential of working on paper. Works On Paper will showcase artists with
an experimental spirit and exploration of the interaction between artist and paper in the process of creating art. No
