Art Park 21: Groundwork  competition

The Art Park 21 team and the Open Space Visitor Center in Albuquerque invite artists/artisans to propose a temporary outdoor installation with an eco-centric theme.

The AP21 team is in the process of establishing a 21st century art park in the Albuquerque – Santa Fe corridor.  A key element in the groundwork for establishing this park will be a temporary exhibit of multiple outdoor installations that fit the theme of the park.  The park will feature eco-centric installations that take 21st century views of what could be possible in an art park, and of our relationship with our environment.  Installations that are the product of collaboration between one or more artists/artisans and an engineer/scientist/researcher/technician will be welcome, as would artworks that make use of new knowledge, materials, techniques or technology and place a value on a sustainability.  Potential themes and scopes of artworks could include those that incorporate atmospheric elements such as wind, rain, sunlight, humidity; artworks that incorporate plant life, recycled or repurposed elements; artworks that generate electricity; interactive artworks; artworks that explore the interface between three dimensional art and architecture.

In March of 2018, The Open Space Visitors Center in Albuquerque will host an exhibit of drawings and renderings of proposed installations and in 2019 the center will host the temporary siting of several realized works on their grounds.  All of the concept proposals that are included in the exhibit will be published in a catalog to accompany the exhibit.  Artists and teams included in the exhibit will be offered a stipend to produce and install the proposed element on the grounds of the center in 2019.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

There is no cost to apply to this competition.  Applicants must register with the Art Park 21 team by November 15, 2017 and submit proposals by January 15, 2018.  On November 15, applicants will be advised who the jurors will be and the format for submissions.  Do not contact the Open Space Visitor Center with questions, this project is being overseen by the Art Park 21 team.

Royal Academician David Remfry, former Vogue picture editor-turned-curator Robin Muir, the Tate’s Head of Learning, Programme and Resources Fiona Kingsman lead this year’s judging panel.

For the first time, a new miniatures category is being offered alongside categories in painting, drawing, original print, photography, wall hung installation, digital art and moving image. There is a separate children’s competition, judged by celebrated writer and illustrator Chris Riddell.
