Eligibility:

ENCLAVE LAND ART and the Vall de Gallinera council (Alicante, Spain) with the support of Cultura Resident from Consorci de Museus de la Comunitat Valenciana and the Direcció General del Cultura i Patrimoni de la Generalitat Valenciana, are glad to announce the open call for the Third Edition of the Enclave Land Art Residency.

Submissions should focus on the dialogue between human beings and nature so as to create an artistic Land Art itinerary in the area.

We will select seven projects from different artistic disciplines that will be developed and produced in the natural environment during the two weeks of the Art Residency, sharing experiences, ideas and a common goal.

All projects must take into consideration people's interest in contemporary arts, aiming to give greater value to the area of Vall de Gallinera, promoting a deep and permanent conscience about the historical, cultural and traditional aspects of the territory through a dialogue between art and nature.

Concept:

"Truly memory does not consist at all of a regression from the present to the past, but rather in a progress from the past to the present."

Bergson H., Matter and Memory, 2006.

The power of intangibleness in art could be considered to be the core of creation and transformation: perception, habits, culture, language, time or memory can be channels used to define artistic research.

This symbiosis between tangible and immaterial is what, along with history, builds the identity of a territory. There are many important elements in Vall de Gallinera apart from its geologic structure and its natural heritage, like for example the vestiges from prehistory up to the civil war, passing through Iberian villages, funerary steles and medieval castles. This historical legacy, traces of human beings along the millennia, has been preserved in this enclave thanks to its natural idiosyncrasy. They are the physical result of a non-linear time that presents a dialogue of human beings with nature through its layers. These layers could be metaphorically a book (nature itself) where the territory's inhabitants have written their story and defined their identity.

Nature has since forever been a spiritual source of research and inspiration for human beings. It is not a coincidence that one can see trees in the forms of the columns in the churches, or caves in the arches, and many other examples. This union appears represented in different styles and functions, and in what remains when time and various factors alter them.

Due to this connection between absence/presence that is preserved nowadays, the inner identity has been reinforced with nature as witness. These are the elements that the selected artists will be invited to reinterpret through their projects.

Enclave Land Art aims to start a new chapter, leaving a contemporary trace to continue this dialogue with the environment through contemporary art. The relationship with what remains, together with what is not visible but nonetheless is present and forms part of Vall de Gallinera's people, represents who the locals are nowadays as a result of the path trodden.

Duration of the open call:

Open Call: Group Exhibition in London

Share

City:

Eligibility:

This open call invites artists of all disciplines to join a group exhibition that will take place at Craft Central London in September 2021. Curated by Seray Ozdemir and organized by Anna Kolosova and Melissa Vipritskaya Topal, the exhibition will explore the theme of boredom.

Working to optimize for and invest in the future has become our mode of being, yet the constant precarity and insecurity we are being subjected to by market forces mean that we can’t even begin to see what’s two steps ahead of us. The digital devices of diversion ensure that we are never present in the present either. We are so used to being simultaneously stimulated by various types of media to the point where not multitasking feels unnatural. To most, the idea of actually doing nothing sounds foreign if not completely implausible or even anxiety-inducing, as maybe we started finding comfort in exhausting our receptors too much to leave space for self-reflection.

Audre Lorde teaches us that if the revelation and distillation of experience and feelings have become a luxury, then we have given up our power and we have given up the future of our worlds. If today, our perpetual state of severe ennui and mental fatigue makes achieving self-awareness a luxury; then we propose embracing boredom as a resistance technique. Inviting boredom into our lives collectively would mean rejecting the neoliberal achievement-obsessed mentality and disengaging ourselves from the ethos of never-ending productivity. Borrowing from Lorde, we acknowledge boredom as a tool for tangible action and change; therefore, a route to freedom.

Let us affirm together: Boredom is not a luxury.

5th Midwest Open - Alison Wong

Ends on August 1, 2021

 $30.00 USD

Woman Made Gallery seeks submissions for the Annual Midwest Open, now in its 5th year, and planned for October-November 2021. This is a group exhibition juried by Alison Wong (Director and Curator of Wasserman Projects). This exhibition will be held at Woman Made Gallery located at 2150 S. Canalport Ave., Chicago, IL 60608 in the Pilsen neighborhood.

EXHIBITION DESCRIPTION

The Midwest Open is an annual exhibition at WMG that highlights women and non-binary artistic excellence from the Midwest. This exhibition puts forth the vibrancy, diversity, and strong feminist voice right here in the Heartland.

As a juried exhibition, each iteration of the Midwest Open offers applicants the unique opportunity to have their work reviewed by esteemed arts professionals and industry connectors. The exhibition then results from a highly selective juried competition and presents excellent work across career levels. Hundreds of artists enter our competitions every year, but only a limited number make it through the jurying process. Cash prizes are awarded to top three artists in exhibition, as designated by the juror.

Awards: 1st place: $300 | 2nd place: $150 | 3rd place: $75

The exhibition benefits artists and viewers alike. While included artists receive exposure, those with an interest in art made by women and non-binary folks are provided with an invaluable resource for discovering Midwestern talent.

Woman Made Gallery seeks artwork in all mediums. We encourage intersectional feminist approaches and lived experiences considering gender and sexuality, race, ethnicity, class, and/or disability, among other social locations.

ABOUT THE JUROR

Alison Wong is first-generation Chinese American artist, curator, and educator born in Illinois and based in Detroit, MI since 2004. Wong received her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI and her BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD. Our concept encourages experimental strategies aiming to provide our participants with the experience of accomplishing something collectively.
