Provisional Driving - introduction to using a sewing machine



Provisional Driving Introduction To Using a Sewing Machine class has been developed to address the needs of those who have little or no experience of using a sewing machine. Through this class participants will learn not only basic sewing machine skills, but will develop the confidence to progress onto making things for themselves using a sewing machine.In the afternoon, put your new found skills into practise to create a practical item (a creative cushion or bag) in the"Creative Making on the Machine"class.

On completion of this class participants will confidently be able to:

- thread a sewing machine and wind a bobbin.

- feed fabric through, sew in a straight line and turn corners.

- explore the range of features and stitches on the machine.

- sew different types of seams.

- Understand how to hem the edge of the cloth.

- apply a pocket and patches.

Exhibition by Sonia Heyworth, Weston-Super-Mare



LT Gallery opened on Saturday 3rd December as a new space in Weston-Super-Mare for exhibiting art and furniture. The work currently on display is by Laura Tucker with a slideshow of Tomasz Piotrowski's work. Please join us at the preview drinks for an exhibition by Sonia Heyworth on Saturday 10th December 2-4pm. Her exhibition will run until Saturday 7th January 2017. Artists' talk + networking at Mayfair Gallery Elena Shchukina




#besmartaboutart networkingis a monthly opportunity to meet and develop relationships with artists, curators & other peers and to expand knowledge - creative and professional alike.

In December 2016, we're visiting Gallery Elena Shchukina, a Mayfair space that brings contemporary art to London, with a focus on identifiable or innovative techniques. The gallery, which runs a programme of lectures in conjunction with each show, will be simultaneously staging two solo exhibitions at the time of our event:

Returning Home,an exhibition of ink wash and oil painting by Paris-based Chinese artist Chen Jiang-Hong.

Weaving Threads of Silk, an exhibition of paintings by Shangai-based artist TSAI YuLung.

About the event:

Starting at 6.30pm, we'll start with viewing the shows, in combination with casual networking. At approximately 7.00pm, Gallery Director Elena Shchukina will give a talk on the art programme and will also provide a brief tour of the exhibitions. After the talk and tour have concluded, everyone will segway into mingling with Be Smart About Art's popular networking tips.

Out Of Nature sculpture show 2017 calling for applications



Out Of Nature is a large biannual sculpture show set in formal gardens on the Welsh borders to celebrate our link with nature and raise funds for The Cart Shed. We are calling for applications for the next one, in October 2017. The deadline is January 20th, 2017, and application forms can be found

1: Cutting Through in a Crowded Space

9.45 AM - 1 PM

Learn how to navigate the art world effectively, build your reputation, sell work through galleries, and fund your next project.

The morning is led by visual arts producer Kath Cockshaw who has worked with emerging, mid-career and high profile artists since 1998. Each section is designed to help you realise specific goals, supported by the afternoon workshop:

  • Your Route to Success: Identify what you want to achieve, where you want your work to appear, tools and steps you need to get there

  • Mapping Today's Art World: This workshop gives a birds-eye view of types of display, sales spaces on and off-line, how to access them

  • Show and Sell: Get the low-down on working with galleries, art fairs, marketing representatives, learn to manage your/ their expectations

  • Funding Your Next Step: Consider options for funding your next project, learn secrets of successful crowdfunding.


2: Social Media Workshop

2 PM 5 PM

Build confidence and make social media work for you. Learn vital skills youll need to promote your work from experienced marketing professionals.

This three hour workshop, designed for beginners/ intermediate level users will be delivered by digital marketing professionals Sean Buchan and Chris Bettles.The session will enable you to become proficient with social media so that it becomes an enjoyable part of your creative process.

Assuming basic knowledge, we will teach you how to:

  • Build confidence online with sound advice and hands on practice to develop your skills

  • Discover which platforms are best for you, how to use them effectively and efficiently and how to have fun along the way

  • Learn how to develop an authentic voice online, get noticed by the right people, engage with relevant audiences, and create interesting content to promote you and your work.
