Call for Indigenous filmmakers: get customized training to develop a short documentary through NSI IndigiDocs

The National Screen Institute – Canada (NSI) is now accepting applications for the 2020 edition of NSI IndigiDocs – a two-phase course offering customized training for Indigenous filmmakers to develop a short documentary.

New for this edition of NSI IndigiDocs: applicants no longer apply as a team. NSI IndigiDocs is now designed for individual filmmakers who have an idea for a 10-minute documentary film.

In phase 1 up to eight students will attend a 12-day boot camp in Winnipeg to learn about writing, producing and directing, and develop a script for their documentary idea. At the end of phase 1 all students will have a market-ready film proposal.

In phase 2, a jury will choose up to four students from phase 1 to go into production. Students receive a cash award of up to $16K and approximately $10K of in-kind services. Phase 2 students will work in their own community for the majority of the time and will be paired with an industry mentor to help with development and production. Phase 2 students also attend Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Film Festival in Toronto.

Edinburgh TV Festival Ones to Watch

hotel generation young artist development programme open call

hotel generation​ is a UK wide, young artist development programme mentoring four shortlisted participants from outside of London through an open call, culminating in a solo exhibition for one of the artists selected by a panel of judges.

Criteria for submissions 

- be aged 26 or under
- make work using emerging and digital media
- be a maximum of two years from graduating a UK University located outside of London (BA, MA or equivalent)
- be living in the UK but outside of London (at the time of application)

Selection of the participants

In spring each year, the arebyte curatorial team will shortlist four participants from the open call to being the artist development programme. These artists will each receive a stipend to begin the development stage of their initial proposal.

Judging panel

This year the judging panel is comprised of Alan Warburton (multi-disciplinary artist based in London), new media specialist David Gryn (Director and Founder of daata editions), digital art curator Kelani Nichole (Director and founder of TRANSFER Gallery, NY), Beryl Graham (Course Leader / Prof. of New Media Art, University of Sunderland) and Irini Papadimitriou (Creative Director of Future Everything)

Development programme

Working closely with the arebyte team, the four shortlisted artists will receive studio visits, professional guidance, critical feedback and assistance to develop their initial proposals. They will be given help with all aspects of exhibiting including proposal writing, making and progressing work and ideas, as well as budgeting, fundraising and running a marketing campaign. All four candidates will also be asked to think about including a series of related events within their exhibition timeframe

The winning participant will then be selected by a judging panel, with each of the four judges having one vote. Each year we invite various leading figures in the art sector with varying expertise in fields such as technology and curation.

The artist selected for a solo exhibition will then receive further funds as well as continued support from the gallery team.The exhibition will run for four weeks at the end of the year and will be accompanied by a publication documenting the exhibition and the proposal from the three other participants. This year, the programme will strengthen links between the four candidates by including a 2-day curatorial intensive taking place in London with the four artists.

CONJURED FUTURES

In conjunction with the Interplanetary Festival

Conjured Futures is a juried projection featuring photographic images that address or question new technologies, policies, and movements that are shaping the future of humanity. In this curation, we focus on projects that look at solutions or alternate outcomes. So often in western society do we see an emphasis that is put on destruction and problems, without considering what can be done to remediate damage.

In the last 5 – 10 years with the advent of drone photography and popularity of aerial photography, there have been many projects documenting the massive changes to the environment caused by human activity. These projects have helped to generate an understanding of humanity’s present environmental and socio-political crisis, and now it is time to think about the future. How are technologies being used to preserve and restore the environment? What does the future look like? What is being done to take control of our futures?

All photographic projects addressing the themes of Conjured Futures are welcome to apply to the Call for Entry. $20 entry fee, $5 for CENTER Members and New Mexico Residents.
