Call for entries! Motion State Dance Film Series

Motion State Dance Films Series, is the only year-long, traveling short dance film festival in New England devoted to showcasing the diversity of contemporary creative voices exploring the medium of choreography for the camera.

By taking the festival "on the road" and into non-traditional film venues, such as art galleries, music halls, performing arts theatres, and university classrooms, Motion State seeks to expose the films and film makers to new audiences.

Motion State Arts is a non-profit organization based in Providence, RI. MSA produces the Motion State Dance Film Series, Playing Favorites, Motion State Dance Festival, and Small Moves, Big Picture.

Alternative Night of Experimental Film

After three successful screening events attended by wonderful creators, the Alternative Night of Experimental Film is back - once again inviting submissions of short experimental films and moving image works that will compose the programme for an informal screening in an alternative music venue in Kingston upon Thames, London.

We are particularly interested in works by emerging filmmakers and artists based in London; the aim of the event is to create a platform for conversation and networking for those who are exploring the alternative creative paths through experimental cinema.

Altered Images

Altered images is a spontaneous space for experimental film production, videoart, installations and live music. The festival aims to showcase silent or sound movies that are open to a sound reinterpretation.
Our showcase is open to artists all around the world whose works have an experimental and innovative character.
Its goal is to create forthcoming events of live music, projections and art installations where people can enjoy the show in a relaxed and friendly environment. We’re looking for brave and risky filmmakers, who enjoy exploring the sounds and the different touch other artists can provide to their images.

The Uncanny

When the familiar becomes unfamiliar, we call it uncanny. That is to say, when something almost satisfies our brain’s search for human likeness, but falls short by a small margin, we experience a characteristic sense of unease at the sight of it. This is our understanding of what it is about realistic androids and almost-perfect-but-not-quite CGI that makes our skin crawl, and it stems from Freudian theory surrounding the German word “unheimlich.” Freud tells us that the unheimlich, or unhomely, is our experience when confronted with something that is like home to us, but is made wrong somehow. How do you incorporate the unheimlich, or uncanny, into your artwork?
