In Other Tongues: intimate geographies, ecologies of conversation

A residential short course produced by art.earth at Dartington Hall

June 10-14 2017

Taking the idea of geographical intimacy as its starting point, this five-day residential course offers a special opportunity to explore how we relate to the poetics of place. Its a chance to engage in practical, playful and serious enquiry into our experience of landscape and all things that inhabit it - from those that can be seen and heard, to those living in more in-between or imagined spaces.

Creative use of words form the core of the course along with image-making, voice and embodied exercises. We will work both indoors and outdoors as we deepen and attune more to ourselves and our experiences of place.

Developing our ability to listen will be key to this process, as will remaining open, always, to the unexpected. A willingness to participate is more important than previous experience: we welcome anyone interested in creating new work, or bringing new light to bear on work that's already in progress. There will be plenty of exercises to fire and inspire the imagination, as well as time to go exploring, to contemplate, to be still, to wonder.

Central to this short course is an approach of generous, vigilant enquiry, with ample time for reflection and sharing. There will be group workshops as well as opportunities for individual sessions with the tutors.

This course is linked to a creative summit: In Other Tongues: creating metaphysics, embodying language, June 7-9.

Narrative
A debt collecting company, Debt BB buys the student loan book from the government for more than it is worth, on the condition it can use unconventional means to collect debt. Debt BB codes an algorithm to ensure fewer loan defaulters by targeting individuals through the use of big
data, placing job adverts on web pages they frequent. Superdebthunterbot has a capacity to self-educate, to learn and to modify its coding sequences independent of human oversight (Susan Schullppi, Deadly Algorithms). Five individuals have died as a result of the algorithms actions, by partaking in unregulated medical trials. In the eyes of the International Ether Court, can the said algorithm be found guilty?

Background
The Trial of Superdebthunterbot was first performed as an artwork on the opening night of the exhibition Collaborate! at Oriel Sycarth Gallery. The work was performed by lawyers; Oana Labontu Radu and Lauries Elks who wrote the prosecution and defence speeches and TV actor, Mark Frost who was the judge. The jury was made up of the audience on the opening night of the exhibition. The algorithm is housed in a see - through computer made by artist Daniel Dressel which sits in the dock.

In May 2016, the performance was restaged the performance at Southwark Crown Court and a 45 minute film of the same title was shot. The film was premiered during the the Goldsmiths MFA show.
