The City of Manhattan is a vibrant community of nearly 55,000 residents in northeast Kansas, two hours from Kansas City.  Manhattan is home to Kansas State University, a leading academic, research, and collegiate athletics institution, as well as Manhattan Christian College and Manhattan Area Technical College. An additional asset is the adjacent Fort Riley U.S. Army installation, home of the 1st Infantry Division.

The City of Manhattan, Kansas, seeks proposals for a public art mural project. Artists are invited to submit a proposal for this exciting opportunity to provide a large-scale work of art to be created inside the new Douglass Activity Center, currently under construction at 925 Yuma Street, in Manhattan, Kansas.

This mural project represents a unique opportunity for the selected artist to create a piece of public art representing the Black community in Manhattan. The mural’s theme should speak to the cultural and historical legacy of the area while celebrating and honoring the strength and resilience of the Black community. The mural should celebrate social justice, the creative cultural landscape, and changing attitudes toward racial equality. This mural will be the pinnacle of the Douglass Activity Center and will instill a sense of pride for the City’s diverse demographic.

Eligibility:

Deco Publique invites Expressions of Interest for The Wakes Week inspired Mural Commission.

Deco Publique is an art and culture company based by the sea in Morecambe and working in and around the North.  We make public art that animates coastal spaces, rural landscapes and urban centres. Our portfolio includes the National Festival of Making and Vintage by the Sea Festival; the commissioning programme - Art in Manufacturing; the co-design programme - The FOLD; and the co-production of landscape artworks, Headlands to Headspace.

Deco Publique will commission an artist to produce a mural exploring the heritage of The Wakes Week - a holiday period with a strong tradition of mill towns visiting Morecambe and other Lancashire towns, attracted by the healing powers of the sea.

We are seeking proposals which:

  • Explore the heritage themes whilst being visually contemporary in line with our aspiration to create vibrant public space.
  • Demonstrate the artist/collectives’ experience in delivering large scale commissions and producing high quality outcomes with cultural and artistic credibility

The artist will use the thematic reference of The Wakes Week to inform the mural, which will highlight Morecambe as a contemporary destination and staycation location for Summer 2021 and beyond. This is particularly prevalent in light of current and future travel restrictions - attracting visitors and promoting the resort's natural beauty and seaside attractions.

As well as a mural, responses to the brief may include:

  • community engaged work
  • digital work that can be shared online
  • graphic posters and printed assets reference points can be seen in the tradition of 19th century posters

We are committed to encouraging diversity and eliminating discrimination. We encourage applications from all backgrounds and communities, and we are committed to working with people who identify with protected characteristics, diverse skills, experiences and abilities.

Budget: £4500 fixed fee (See inclusions and exclusions on the full brief)

Deadline: 16th February (midnight)

Project Timescale: February 2021 to April 2021.

02/16/2021
