OPEN THEME | CALL FOR ENTRIES | AN INTERNATIONAL JURIED PHOTO EXHIBITION
Entry Deadline | June 30TH, 2022
Notice of Acceptance | July 12TH, 2022
Exhibition Dates | Aug 27TH – Sept 10TH
Theme: Open Theme | Juror: Ann Jastrab
To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting… It has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.
- Elliott Erwitt -
Praxis Gallery seeks the submission of photographic art of any genre and any subject matter that represents the artist’s endeavor to reveal through the photographic process a personal declaration of visual significance - be it a celebration of pure aesthetic formalism, of humor or conflict - of fiction or fact - or any other literal or ephemeral lens-based investigation. All genres, capture types, black & white and color, traditional and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are welcome for submission.
JUROR | ANN JASTRAB
Ann Jastrab, Executive Director for The Center for Photographic Art, is a champion of photographic artists. After earning her MFA in photography at the Savannah College of Art and Design in 1995, she joined the resident faculty at the Maine Photographic Workshops and taught there for nearly a decade in both their year-round program and their intensive summer workshops. Prior to taking the position of executive director of CPA, she curated many exhibitions for RayKo during her tenure as gallery director - while also jurying, curating, and organizing numerous exhibitions for other national and international venues outside of the San Francisco Bay Area. She has served on numerous boards and fundraising committees and has been thrilled to bring her talents, passion, and leadership skills to The Center for Photographic Arts. Besides being a curator and an educator, Ann is a writer and editor and she is also a fine art photographer who still carries around a wooden view camera…and a metal one too.

TRANSIENCE | OPEN CALL | PRAXIS DIRECTORS GALLERY
Entry Deadline | Mar 15th, 2022
Notice of Acceptance | Mar 23rd, 2022
Exhibition Dates | April 16th – 30th 2022
Theme: Transience | Guest Curator: Aline Smithson
The last two years have been profound in our reconsiderations of self. The pandemic has transformed the way we behave, has affected our psyches, and made us examine what is most important in our lives. We discovered that everything is fleeting and temporary, ever changing, moving, and evolving. Transience comes in many forms and awareness of the transience of all things heightens appreciation of their beauty and evokes a gentle sadness at their passing.
Praxis Gallery seeks the submission of photographic art that speaks to the transitory nature of life--from flora and fauna, from objects left behind after a loved ones passing, to memories and loss. All genres, capture types, black & white and color, traditional and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are welcome for submission.

Women ‘Camera Operators’ - Photographers & Female Sight
As women “camera operators” (a 19th century term for photographers), aren’t we all struck by light?
Since the beginnings of photography in the mid-nineteenth century, women have had prominent roles as artists. The popularization of the medium in the first decades of the twentieth century met with a confluence of social forces, including art and activism, that expanded opportunities for women in both art and public life. Working in a range of styles, pioneering artists like Anna Atkins, Imogen Cunningham, Berenice Abbott, and Carrie Mae Weems forged independent perspectives that changed how we picture the world. [CMOA]
Praxis Gallery seeks the submission of photographic art created by or about women image-makers, including trans-women and femme/feminine-identifying, genderqueer, and non-binary lens-based photographic artists. All genres, capture types, traditional and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are welcome for submission.
Guest Curator | Ellen Carey
Ellen Carey lives, teaches and works in Connecticut, after many years in New York (1979-1995), where she was born (1952). Ellen Carey is an educator, independent scholar, guest curator, photographer and lens-based artist. Her unique experimental work (1974-2021) spans several decades highlighted in 70 one-person exhibitions, several hundred group ones (1974-2022), publishing essays under Pictus & Writ (2008-2021) in tandem with multiple books, exhibition catalogues, lectures and interviews, plus reviews and grants. Ellen Carey named one of 100 top women photographers worldwide by The Royal Photographic Society. The Still Life

Eligibility:

THE STILL LIFE | CALL FOR ENTRIES | AN INTERNATIONAL JURIED PHOTO EXHIBITION
Entry Deadline | January 31st, 2022
Notice of Acceptance | February 12th, 2022
Exhibition Dates | Mar 19th - April 2nd, 2022
Theme: The Still Life | Juror: Kimberly Witham
Still life photography, more so than other types of photography, such as landscape or portraiture, gives the photographer extensive leeway and precise control in the arrangement of design elements within a composition. Still life photography is a demanding genre, one in which the photographers are expected to be able to form their work with a refined sense of lighting, coupled with composition and design skills. The still life photographer makes pictures rather than takes them.
Praxis Gallery seeks the submission of photographic art that investigates the genre of the Still Life. Submissions may explore classical to conceptual aspects of the still life, photographing object arrangements that intrigue, engage or entertain the viewer. All genres, capture types, color and black & white, traditional, and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are welcome for submission
JUROR | KIMBERLY WITHAM
Kimberly Witham is an artist and educator who currently resides in Glen Gardner, NJ. She earned a BA in Art History from Duke University and an MFA in photography from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. Her photographs are strongly influenced by her studies in art history and her interest in the natural world. Since moving to New Jersey in 2006, her work has focused on the relationship between humans and wildlife. Her still life images include road kill animals, yard sale items, and flowers and fruit (often grown in the artist’s own garden). Her work has been featured in Color Magazine, PHOTO+, BLOW photo, The Photo Review, BLINK, Foto, Orion, The New Republic, and Wired (online) and has been used as cover illustration for books in the US and France. In 2016, National Geographic created a short film about Kimberly’s studio practice entitled “Making Roadkill Into Art.” She has won awards and grants including the Feature Shoot Emerging Photography Award, a fellowship at the Center for Emerging Visual Artists, the Clarence John Laughlin Award and the Lindback Distinguished teaching award. Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in the United States and abroad and is held in numerous private collections. Kimberly is an Associate Professor of Photography at Bucks County Community College. Kimberly also teaches specialized workshops in still life photography and lighting.

MOTION > BLUR | OPEN CALL | PRAXIS DIRECTORS GALLERY
Entry Deadline | Jan 15th, 2022
Notice of Acceptance | Jan 23rd, 2022
Exhibition Dates | Feb 19th – Mar 5th, 2022
Theme: Motion > Blur | Curated By: Praxis Directors
In most cases, photography is used to “freeze time,” with a still image. Motion in photography creates a paradox: the image is a frozen moment in time but what is captured is an object that is a blur of motion – an apparent streaking, bending, distorting and /or movement of light and objects in the foreground or background of the image frame. Blur can demonstrate the velocity of movement. It can convey the emotional dimensions of the subject photographed; presenting dream like qualities by invoking the surreal and transitory nature of time passing. Meteors streak across the sky, ghostly figures move through a room, the artist paints shapes with a light source. These are some examples of how blur represents motion in time-lapse photography.
Praxis Gallery seeks the submission of photographic art that demonstrates the fundamental qualities that make motion & blur a compelling element of contemporary photography. All genres, capture types, black & white and color, traditional and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are welcome for submission.
