The Butterbiggens Prize is an experiment to see if an art foundation can be productive on a micro scale. We provide tiny grants for artists in the form of fast food gift certificates.

A showcase for contemporary emerging artists, Every month a UK painter will be nominated, and receive a fast food voucher as well as an online interview and profile. 

Micro Fellowship for UK painters, juried by a group of Scottish Art Students.

There is no fee to submit.

Publication Opportunity for Emerging Artists

Apply to have your work considered in Volume 11 by Friend of the Artist. FOA is a quarterly book dedicated to elevating the work of emerging artists around the world. Our publication releases every quarter and includes the work of artists who work in a variety of mediums. Accepted artists will have a four-page spread of their work, information, and artist statement. Volume 11 will be guest juried by Anna Mikaela Ekstrand, Angeliki Kim Jonsson, and Adele Smejkal and will be available in our store and online retailers including Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

 

Application Details

Accepted artists will have three works published in Volume 11, will receive a complimentary digital copy of the publication, social media post of work, discounts on books for family and friends, and free digital access to future publications.

Eligible Artists

Artists of all academic disciples are welcome to apply. This includes painting, sculpture, photography, installation, and performance art. Works must be submitted in a printable format.

Juror bios:

Anna Mikaela Ekstrand

Anna Mikaela Ekstrand is a Swedish/Guyanese independent curator and publisher living in New York City. Although she curates across mediums, she is especially interested in exploring equitable ways to disseminate performance art. Anna Mikaela served as co-/curator for the performance art events 'Tales Of Tales' (106 Rivington, 2019), ’Grebnellaw: Sperming The Planet' (House of Yes and The Oculus, 2018), and 'Your Decolonizing Toolkit' (MAW, 2016). She has held curatorial positions at Metropolitan Museum of Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim, Bard Graduate Center, and Museum of Arts and Design. Deeply vested in research, she has worked on over a dozen in-museum and off-site art and design related exhibitions and their catalogs. Anna Mikaela is the founding editor-in-chief of Cultbytes, an online art publication that focuses on interdisciplinary and non-hierarchical art criticism. She holds dual MA degrees, in Design History, Material Culture, and Decorative Arts from Bard Graduate Center and in Art History from Stockholm University.

Angeliki Kim Jonsson & Adele Smejkal

We are two art enthusiasts and professionals with a diverse experience of working in the art world. Angeliki Kim Jonsson is the founder of DYNAMISK an Independent consultancy that offers Curating and Art Advisory. Alongside DYNAMISK she also hosts “In Conversation with..” which is an ever growing series of vibrant and unique conversations with pioneering individuals from the art world. Adele Smejkal works for Sotheby’s London and is also a freelance journalist and the founder of @as_artjournal, an Instagram based page about art. Through a shared passion for art and presence on social media, we have formed our friendship and partnership. Our story, vision and thinking alike inspired us to create the Art/choke.

The Magazine of Contemporary Arts - Call for Submissions

THE MAGAZINE OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS is an online publication covering visual arts from around the world. It is designed to assume an international platform where artists can be connected directly with art professionals, bringing their art to a worldwide viewership of 3.2 billion internet users.

The magazine is currently accepting submissions for its upcoming issue from visual artists relating to any medium. Digital images of paintings, drawings, graphic art and 3D installations of any size will be considered without limitations to the artist’s age, nationality, or country of origin. The curated works will be featured in the monthly edition of the magazine. Each month, the artworks and interviews from up to five artists will be displayed in the gallery. Thereafter, the works will be permanently archived in the monthly editions of the magazine for a small hosting fee.

Through this contest, we will offer 1 artist the chance to win free 3 weeks artist residency (travel + accomodation) at beautiful seaside resort — ArtFarm Liepaja with further opportunity to hold a solo exhibition at the gallery Artpegazs, Riga in 2020. We accepting all contemporary and fine art submissions that clearly employ and represent the theme of contest. The theme for 2019 is Taste of Life..

About This Contest

In the first stage, applications of the submitted images of works are assessed by a jury to make a selection of works for the exhibition.

In the second stage, artworks of 30 contest finalists are assessed in the contest exhibition at the art gallery Artpegazs and prizes are presented.

The Cost: €25 (about $28) per entry

The Prize: 3 weeks artist residency (travel grant + accomodation) at Artfarm Liepaja seaside resort (june–september) with further opportunity to hold a solo exhibition at the gallery Artpegazs in 2020.

Media Accepted: Painting, Illustration, Drawing, Printmaking, Mixed media. No more than 3 twodimensional works, with the widest side of the artwork not exceeding 150 cm.

The Flat Files Open Call at OyG: 2020

The Flat Files at OyG: 2020 will open with an exhibition on Saturday, January 11, 2020. The program will continue in our flat files until December 2020. Participating artists and individual works will be promoted and featured on OyG social media outlets, exhibition press release, our mailing list, and our website for purchase. All works will be available for visitor browsing at OyG.

 Visual artists working in drawing, painting, collage, photography, fiber, and other two-dimensional media are encouraged to apply. The artists will be selected by the OyG Co-Directors based on the quality of their work and commitment to their practice. 

 We are excited to develop and share this new program with you, as we continue to support unrecognized and deserving artists. We look forward to discovering your work!
