CAMP is a residential arts facility in the French Pyrenees. It's a place where great art is made, new movements are formed, new ideas are explored and groundbreaking people are nurtured. CAMP is located in Aulus les Bains, the last village before the France/Spain Pyrenean frontier chain. The location is spectacular - we are nestled at 750m above sea level, surrounded by snowcapped peaks over 3000m high, ancient forests and cascading waterfalls. There are eagles, lammergeiers, vultures, ibex and bears. Walk out of the residency, and within ten minutes you are completely alone in one of the most beautiful mountain landscapes in Europe. Aulus les Bains is also a spa village - there are hot water springs, and a thermal spa in the village to take advantage of the healing and relaxing properties of the water.

John Burgess has worked as a director and producer of new plays for over forty years. He helped found the National Theatre Studio with Peter Gill in 1984 and he was Head of New Writing at the National theatre 1989 -1994. Writers whose work he has premiered include Nicholas Wright, Sarah Daniels, Jonathan Harvey, Judith Johnson, David Spencer, Stephen Wakelam and Meredith Oakes. His productions have been seen at the National Theatre, the Royal Court, the Donmar, the Bush, Stratford East, Riverside Studios and BBC Television as well as abroad in Switzerland, Scandinavia and the US.

Since 2011 John has been running a highly successful writers' group whose graduates have had their work performed at the National Theatre, in the West End, at the Soho Theatre, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Arcola, BBC Radio 4, the Traverse Theatre Edinburgh, the Finborough and Hampstead Theatre and published by Faber and Nick Hern Books. These five days are about the practice not the theory of playwriting.

Days will be divided into 2 intense two-hour group sessions with assigned reading and set exercises in between, making for eight (or even nine) hour days focused on the practical business of writing for the stage. This second five day period builds on skills acquired during the first week, exploring further, more complex topics such as images, letters, science, group scenes, history, work, and the rhetoric of persuasion

Participants will be guided towards finding individual solutions to specific problems of writing for the stage, enabling beginners to find firm ground beneath their feet and giving the more experienced an opportunity to refine and extend their skills.

Following the success of last year's course CAMP are now offering two consecutive weeks with a second follow-up five day period exploring further more complex topics such as images, science, group scenes, history, work, and the rhetoric of persuasion. If you would like to attend both weeks, we encourage you to apply for a grant here and mention in your application that you intend to come to both courses. Applicants attending both weeks will be awarded a grant towards the cost of the second week.

Overview

Theatre Alberta, Alberta Playwrights’ Network, and Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity are proud to welcome Bob Martin and Lisa Lambert, creators of the award-winning musical The Drowsy Chaperone, for a master class in Musical Theatre Creation. 

We are in a new golden age of musical theatre. Writers and composers are exploring daring topics, forms, and styles. This three-day workshop will provide playwrights and theatre creators with tools and insights that can be applied to their own writing practice, and an opportunity to learn about Martin and Lambert’s’ unique and collaborative style of musical theatre creation.

Long-time collaborators Martin and Lambert created The Drowsy Chaperone with writer Don McKellar and composer Greg Morrison. The play opened on Broadway in 2006 and went on to receive multiple Tony and Drama Desk awards, including awards for both book and score. 

What does the program offer?

Participants in Musical Theatre Creation will learn methods and practice skills necessary for creating original work. Topics will include the relationship between book writer and lyricist, the importance of identifying and embracing a personal writing process, and original works versus adaptations (and the challenges that each pose). Participants are asked to bring work-in-progress material to discuss and to receive feedback from the instructors.

Who should apply?

This program is intended for experienced playwrights and theatre creators with a strong interest in musical theatre creation. Individual artists, as well as those working as part of writing teams, are welcome to apply. Songwriting experience is an asset but not a requirement. Please note that this class will not cover musical composition.

Artists residing outside Alberta will be required to pay an out-of-province fee of $100.

This master class is presented by Theatre Alberta, Alberta Paywrights' Network and Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity as part of Theatre Alberta’s Workshops by Request: Rocky Mountain Series.

SUBMISSION WINDOW FOR 2018/19 PLAY LA WORKSHOP, OPEN NOW THROUGH JULY 1

We are very excited to announce that submissions for the next round of PLAY LA awards are now open!  

Winners will receive a $1,500 grant to develop a new play "from the ground up," as well as critiques from theatre, film and television professionals throughout the year-long development process. 

Former mentors include: Filmmaker, Mike Binder; Playwright, Lee Blessing; Producer, Nick Hamm; Warner Brother's Development Executive, Christopher Mack; Literary Agent. Kelly Miller; Critic, Steven Leigh Morris; Oscar winning screenwriter, Tom Schulman; Former CTG Literary Manager, Pier Carlo Talenti; Playwright and Show Runner, Craig Wright.

Please submit: 

  • a brief introductory letter
  • two 10-page writing samples from different plays [names redacted]
  • a resume

And, finally, pay the $25 submission fee. Entry fees may be paid via PayPal only and must be paid online to complete your submission.
