Self-Directed Residencies for individual artists in the Leighton Studios

Overview

A Leighton Studio Residency offers creative professionals 2 to 6 weeks of focused, self-directed time in private, purpose-built studios set in the forested surroundings of Banff Centre. This competitive program supports independent research, creative exploration, and project development, with the flexibility to work in solitude or engage with Banff Centre’s broader artistic community. 

MacDowell: Spring Summer 2025

Artists who are creating new original works of art are welcomed to apply for a MacDowell Fellowship. A MacDowell Fellowship (awarded through a competitive application process) consists of a residency up to six weeks and includes a private studio, housing, and three meals per day. MacDowell is designed to facilitate a balance between social interaction and independent focus on work. Private studios available to artists 24 hours a day, together with the dining and recreation rooms at the main hall, combine to provide an environment adaptable to each individual’s needs.

Each artist has exclusive use of a studio while in residence. Some artists will sleep in their studio, others will sleep in a private bedroom in a shared dormitory.

Half Volunteer Residency in Colombia June 2024. MEALS INCLUDED.

All the participants in ArteSumapaz are Artists in residence, with that said the volunteer program looks to open a more affordable payment method. The volunteer tasks can vary depending on the needs of the residency at the moment, but the main working areas are kitchen cleaning, library management, composting, recycling, and general maintenance (in the main house, the studios, and the natural park). The agreement of half volunteer request 12 hours of work per week. The artist residency program (AIR) is designed for visual artists, musicians, writers, architects, clay artists, performers, and other makers.

Visual Arts: Banff Artist in Residence - Summer 2023

Overview
The Banff Artist in Residence program is designed for visual artists to focus on their practice in a supportive learning environment. Participants are encouraged to self-direct their research and time, as well as cultivate new directions in their work. The experience of artists in residence is further supported through individual studio visits with guest faculty and dialogue amongst peers.

The program encourages experimentation and risk-taking via access to shared production facilities and knowledgeable staff who are available to provide technical support and assistance.

Emerging Banff Artist in Residence

Overview
Banff Artist in Residence (BAiR) Emerging is an immersive program of studio practice, creative exploration, critical feedback, and mentorship for visual artists of all ages in the early stages of their careers.

BAiR Emerging combines the artistic freedom of a self-directed residency with the supportive benefits of an organized program. As well as having the space to create, research, and experiment, participants are part of a community of emerging artists committed to developing and expanding their practice.

Performing Arts Creation Residencies 2020

Overview

Banff Centre is committed to the commissioning, development, and production of new works in all major performance disciplines, and encourages bold collaborations across disciplines. Performing Arts residencies are designed for artists to work on the initial creation phase of a new work in one or more of our studio spaces.

What does the program offer?

These residencies offer a range of work spaces and facilities depending on participants' needs and availability. Banff Centre provides limited production support for these residencies. Additional technical support may be negotiated when possible. Partial residencies may be available.
