PRATT SCHOOL OF DESIGN PRESENTS: TEXTILE THINKING

September 15-30, 2018

Artist Talk: September 30, 3 - 4pm

The exhibition “Textile Thinking” highlights the vibrant and provocative conversations that the faculty and students of the School of Design participate in while interrogating textiles. The field of textiles is a wellspring of inspiration to both the fashion, product and interior design program’s material explorations and theoretical thinking.

As they work outside of the academic structure of a traditional textile program, the students and faculty at the School of Design bring energy, focus and a pragmatic naiveté to the subject of textiles. The exhibition illustrates this conversation through student course work and selected professors’ theoretical and professional endeavors relating to textiles.

The Contemporary Textiles Fair is a well-established, high quality and highly regarded event, held in the magnificent Grade II* gothic surroundings of the Landmark Arts Centre in Teddington, South-West London.

The fair is almost unique in its focus on textile artists & designer makers, unencumbered by suppliers, DIY kits, and other craft disciplines. It is this clear focus, together with the unique setting and returning visitors that make this event both enjoyable and successful, year after year.

The Contemporary Textiles Fair is somewhere textile enthusiasts, collectors and art lovers can come to find artworks with texture, wearable masterpieces, handmade homeware, and unique curiosities. This isn’t granny’s knitted teacosy territory, this is contemporary quality! From stitched wall-hangings with conceptual significance, to carefully designed and hand-crafted objects; this fair does not discriminate – the art/craft barrier fades away to reveal exceptional talent in textiles.

CRITERIA

The criteria for applications is the same for all of the Landmark’s art fairs: individual textile artists and designer-makers whose work demonstrates creativity, innovation and quality, balancing the tactile and functional with the aesthetic. Please note that there is a selection process and, in the interest of keeping the show fresh, a ‘three year’ rule may apply; i.e if you have exhibited for three years in a row you may not be selected for one or two years.

This year there are a limited number of stands being offered at a reduced rate to students and recent graduates. Please refer to the FAQ's and state the Raw Fibres option in the Stand Choices section of the application form.

Open Call: Proposals for Textile Exhibition

Share

Country:

In honor of New York Textile Month the Textile Arts Center (TAC) is hosting a showcase in our newly expanded and renovated Brooklyn Studio. We are currently looking for exhibition proposals for three small pop-up galleries within the space. Because this exhibition correlates with NY Textile Month, proposals should focus on textiles, fibers and/or related techniques. Solo or group shows are welcome.

The selected exhibitions will be up for the month of September, and will include an opening reception on September 5. There will be a number of events at TAC for NY Textile Month so we anticipate a lot of foot traffic throughout September. The exhibition space will be open throughout the month during normal studio hours.

Participation is free. Please note that the gallery spaces are semi-private, and within a working studio that accommodates children and adult classes as well as TAC's Artists in Residence Program.

Curators/artists are responsible for delivery of artwork, installation, hardware, tools and de-installation. Any sales will be processed by the curators/artists with 100% of the commission going to the curator/artists.
